"You are All-Beautiful, O Mary,
and the stain of sin is not in you.
Your clothing is white as snow,
and your face is like the sun.
You are All-Pure, O Mary,
and the stain of sin is not in you.
You are the glory of Jerusalem,
you are the great joy of Israel,
you are the highest honor of our race.
You are completely beautiful, O Mary."

~ "Tota pulchra es, Maria" (4th century prayer) ([link] )
Happy Feast of St. Joseph! I did this as a commission for a friend's mother, who asked me if I would make her a little image of the Immaculate Conception for a rather small wall of theirs', so she specified that it be small, no larger than 5 by 8 inches. Fortunately I had a small piece of board already cut about that size, so I used that.

Based somewhat on BartolomΓ© Esteban Murillo's famous image of the Immaculate Conception: [link] and based on other images based on that image. It has a lot of the usual associative imagery for pictures of the Immaculate Conception: the Holy Spirit above, Our Lady crowned with a halo of twelve stars, with a burst of sun in the back (I made it here centering around her Immaculate Heart), standing on the moon, crushing the devil in the form of a serpent, all as an allusion to Revelations 12:1: "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars...". Surrounding the globe is an array of lilies and red roses, which are traditional floral symbols of Our Lady, each signifying her purity and great love, respectively. Framing the image are four praying angels.

I tried to make the whole thing look rather reminiscent of stained glass, hence, the thick lines of black ink. Enjoy!

I'm such a sucker for stained glass. It looks fantabulous!

A bit overly Catholic for my taste, but nicely done.

Hahaha, well.... it is Catholic... Nothing can ever be overly Catholic in my opinion, though religious images can certainly fall irredeemably into the category of Christian "kitsch." Bleh.

Happy St. Joseph's Day to you! This is very beautiful. I love the stained glass look and your jewel-like colors and details are gorgeous!

Poor St. Joseph. His feast day follows on the heels of St. Patrick's day and he doesn't even get a parade! "St. Patrick was a good saint, but he wasn't a great saint. St. Joseph was a great saint!"--Father Guido Sarducci [link]

Thanks! Yeah, the clouds presented a rather tricky problem, but I'm fairly happy with them now...
