The original games were made for Sega Genesis, and Defender of the Future was a reboot. In this reboot, dolphins and humans made a futuristic alliance where they travel the universe together and have a rich civilization together because of the alliance. But an alien race called the Foe have been rampaging and conquering everything in their way, and decide earth is the next candidate. So they eff up the timeline and destroy the bond between man and dolphin by taking away the qualities of dolphins that allowed them to make this alliance with man -- ambition, intelligence, humility, wisdom, and compassion. Ecco escapes this fate when he is sucked into their time vortex, and is the only one able to find the lost virtues -- that are in globe form, somehow -- and restore the timeline. There are lots of scary underwater enemies, gorgeous coral reefs, confusing cave systems, and alternative realities. It's very interesting stuff, even though the inspiration is like a pizza dream. Oh, and you get to fight the aliens, too.
