Thankyou!!!! i am trying to capture the small birds in flight, i have never really tried but having looked at lots of bird photography i have noticed hardly any in flight shots. something i love to see in all species, so these are my attemps at
capturing them in flight. it also revealed some comical behaviour shots too.

I only managed seagulls once, in fact you can say all my knowledge and techniques for photographing birds in flight comes from gulls, best thing is you can manipulate them to create interesting shots too, like my Wings shot. i always have half a our
photographing the gulls, i must have a few hundred shots of them, if i keep consistant with capturing the gulls if i get confronted with something really special ill stand a good chance of getting it.

Several times yesterday, I sat on out veranda hoping to get photos of the New Holland Honey Eaters feeding on the Kangaroo Paw flowers. The outcome was 28 pictures that went straight to the rubbish bin. Thank goodness for digital cameras.
I guess I'll be back photographing the gulls again on my next trip to Albany. I go down to the jetty for my lunch.

Awesome. I suppose you need one heck of a fast shutter speed. I wonder if I have a speed that fast on mine....nice work! (I just love little songbirds! ^_^)

cheers!!!! well this was shot at 2000thsec, i find a place and angle to get the maximum shutter available. again the time of day and position of the sun all make a difference.

Cheers!!!!!! thats what im enjoying the most about this fast photography of the agile small birds, seeing the interesting moments they have. as for lens it was shot with a Nikon VR 70-200mm F2.8G. at 105mm, 2000thsec at F4.
ye i know what ya mean about the frame, for a shot with small subjects it can be a bit overpowering. im too lazy to create a new template lol.

Amazing!! Hope you don't mind me asking, but how fast of a shutter speed do you need to use to capture this? You seem to be able to catch these amazing positions of the birds which escape the human eye.

Cheers!!!!! im really enjoying seeing the interesting and beautiful bits only a camera lets you see too. As for the speeds im learning as i go, i've gone from as low as 1600thsec up to 3200thsec. the apeture is normaly as wide as you can go F2.8 just to get the shutter speeds required. but at F2.8 the DOF is very limited. the most important thing i have learnt is getting good directional light, dont chase subjects in the wrong place, if somewhere looks good point your camera in a few directions and see what is possible. also check the time of day, i have found that between 1 hour the light can go from 2000thsec to 1000thsec. the best setting i have managed were used for this shot, 2000thsec at F4.

Another great shot!! I am still trying to get good pictures of birds in flight but nothing yet. Your pictures give me encouragement to hang in there and keep trying.

I am. I found a setting on my camera that may help with the motion. But even at 1/30 I still don't get a clear picture. I think the bird's wings are going faster than 30 a second!! But I am persistent and hopefully will find the perfect setting. When I use the Multi Burst setting on traffice, I get great pictures so it is just a matter of finding the right setting for the birds--I hope.

Keep trying!!!! you mentioned 1/30sec that is not enough for motion, minimum is 1/500 or better still 1/1000. this shot was captured at 2000thsec.

Thanks I will try and see how to set my camera at that speed then. I thought I was still too slow.

remember though, even if you can take it too 1000thsec, you must have enough light to expose it, other wise it will be just very dark. its a balance of light + apeture+ shutter speed.

Yes, you are right. I had it at 1000 today and it was very dark. I changed it to 500 and it did lighten up some. I need to adjust the apeture now when using the 1000. At least I think I am heading the right direction. Maybe!! Thanks!!

Exactly the right idea!!!! once ya find the balance and understand what is possible from your equipment, then you can try and find interesting situations to photograph.
