The Hulk never really fit into the Avengers, but in this strange “non-team” he made sense. Also pictured: Valkyrie in a costume that she wore only a short time, Hellcat, and of course Dr Strange.

I always seemed to get attached to comics that were a bit "off to the side." I read Avengers, of course, but I probably bought more Defenders than any other title.
"Dumb Magician! Can't fight with lights-from-hands! Doesn't even make sense!"
At least Fish-Man isn't there to irritate Hulk even more.

I've been rediscovering some 80s stuff that I missed back then, i was big on the Avengers then but missed most of the Defenders, Alpha Flight etc It's been fun to do some archeology and see some of this for the first time.
But generally, I always loved the weirder and more obscure characters. Marvel has so many oddballs and weirdos and campy characters, such a rich world.

I only saw them briefly in whatever cameos they had in comics crossing the pond to us, but I really really liked this Group
