Featuring Q & Eylisi
Autumn, Year 764 of the New Age
Blackwood, North of Widow's Hollow

Q: 1233 | Ey: 800

Eylisi
Blackwood wasn't quite like the stories of Glenmore foretold, though it wasn't exactly wrong either. The forests were inhospitable on a nice day and downright cruel on others. Eylisi, however, generally loved it there. She had arrived last year in Fall and since then, had passed her Rites of the Mother and gained the trust of the herd. Since then, the area had been better. Not to mention, her skills of being able to grow food was seemingly appreciated by most, if not all.

A whole year… she mused, walking alongside her best friend, Q. At first her departure from Glenmore was hard, but now she was more than thankful she had taken the giant leap. The moon was starting to rise above them, the sun having already said its woeful goodbyes on the cool day and now even cooler night. Very few rays of bright moonlight shone through the mostly dead or malnourished trees, casting an eerie look about. If there was one thing she didn't think she would get used to, it was the spooky sounds of predators at night.

Q
It had been nearly a year since the pair had come to Blackwood, and what an adventurous year it had been.  Coming back to his childhood home had never been as wonderful as this trip.  In the past the woods seemed as dark and desolate as they were, hostile, unfriendly, a place he’d removed from his memory to save himself from the pain of remembering his far happier childhood.  But, this time, it was different.  There was a piece of Q that was actually happy.  And that was the side of him now that honed his focus on protecting the thing that made him happy- the source.  Though he would never admit it to her (as he hardly admitted it to himself), Eylisi was the reasoning behind all of his actions recently.

She walked beside him now, beams of moonlight reflecting off of her inky black coat.  These walks were common for them, the journey back and forth from the herd to the area where they slept. Though they spent relatively little time with the herd, Q still held a few old acquaintances.  And, he didn’t hold highest favor since he left the herd and no longer claimed them as his complete allegiance, so he did his best to keep a respectful distance.

Glancing behind them, he quickly scanned for predators and any other unwanted followers.  It wasn’t uncommon to see glistening eyes through the trees at night, but usually his firebending abilities would keep them at bay.  A flame flickered now to existence between his freshly-shed antlers.  “It’s quieter than usual,” he grumbled under his breath.  “I don’t like it.”  There were rustles in the distance, which was also a normal occurrence, but-

A howl echoed in the distance, bouncing off the trees, reverberating in his ears.  In an instant he whirled around, a snarl etched into his lips, amber and blue gaze locked onto the trees.

Eylisi
The doe had opened her mouth to respond when the howl erupted from a distance away- closer than she'd like the howl to be. She had passed her rite but still the sound of the beasts was off putting at best.

Eylisi turned sharply, opening her mouth somewhat, her long sharp fangs bared as her ears swiveled. “Q,” she breathed, hearing the occasional snap of a small twig or the rustle of a dry bush. “Q there's more than one…” she whispered, suddenly turning to have both his side and back. Sure enough, the were surrounded by a small pack of three wolves… At least that she could see. She lowered her head, brandishing a nonexistent rack, baring her fangs back at the amber gold eyes which stared her down, the wolf’s own fangs bared at her, drool dripping from his predatory maw. It was as if the wolves had merely melted from the shadows, their own dark pelts shielding them from view until Q’s fire hit their eyes, lighting them up.

The ebony doe steeled herself, conjuring up slabs of rock, readying for the fight that was sure to ensue.

Q
The dark stag’s ears turned continually, listening to Eylisi as she spoke, and catching the sharp snaps of twigs in the background.  His own lips were curled into a snarl, far less vicious than the fanged doe’s, but fearsome in his own right.  “There’s more than one. . .” No sooner had the words been said than the creatures melted from the darkness, eyes reflecting the flame circling Q’s antlers.

The beasts growled, opening slobber-covered maws to reveal pointed teeth.  A low snarl passed around the group, and Q returned one of his own, as animistic as the creatures who seemed determined enough to fight two fully grown fawnlings.  The stag backed up enough to feel his rump brush against the black doe’s, her muscles as tense as his.

Terse silence fell over them, save for the flickering snap of the flame, which grew hotter and hotter as adrenaline coursed through the renegade’s body.  Finally, neither side could stand it any longer, and the wolves began their attack.  Snarling and snapping teeth came in close, and with a mighty roar Q leaped at them, feathered hooves brandished in the firelight.  “Come and get me, beast!” he hissed at them, lowering his head to brandish sharpened tines as fire licked around his body.

Eylisi
The black doe had been playing a game of ‘don't blink’ with one of the wolves. A mere breath later and hell had broken loose. Wolves lurched forward, Eylisi heard Q start his attack and then she herself surged forward, throwing her slab of stone that clipped one of the wolves’ lower body, a sickening snap resounding through the forest. The wolf let out a pitiful Yipe as it went still, the dark doe figuring she broke its lower back.

Good.

As another of the beasts surged forward, she kicked out her curly hind legs, hoping to clip another of the beasts and avoid kicking Q. She hit one in the face, though it only seemed to enrage the wolf further.

Q
The sounds of Eylisi’s success rang in the stag’s ears, but in the heat of the battle, he hardly paid it much mind, his half-blind gaze, finding only his target.  The massive beast before him was larger than the others, it’s scarred muzzle the sign of countless past fights.  An alpha, he guessed, a wolf who had known victory, perhaps never tasting defeat, and now, it believed itself strong, leading a pack to a fight they surely could not win.

It leapt forwards, snapping at his fur-lined neck, and the action missed, catching only a mouthful of fluff, and leaving an opening for Q.  Slamming his head down, his jaw collided with the wolf’s neck and sent it crashing down wards.  The flames circling his antlers swarmed downwards, filling the clearing with the stench of burning fur.  Howling it’s displeasure the wolf rolled away, disappearing into the woods.

So, he turned his attentions on a smaller one that had been hiding in the back, initially too timid to enter the fight, but eager now to join in the desecration of the rest of his kind.  Q wasted no time in charging after it, his rack lowered, as if to ram it like another stag.  The wolf wound to the side, faster and smaller than he, but not as aged or experienced as his fellows.  It leaped, claws ripping through his side.  Enraged, Q moved instantaneously, swinging his rack, catching the wolf across the side and slicing him open from shoulder to rump.

The beast crumpled into a bloody pile, and the stag wasted no time in finishing it with a well-landed blow to the skull.  A last whine, and it was finished.

Eylisi
Eylisi had since taken down the wolf that she had kicked in the face, having taken it to the ground and repeatedly stomped it until she was sure it had stopped moving. Her eyes took in the surroundings and it seemed clear enough for her to take a moment to turn to check on Q.

A mistake she would soon regret. While she turned to see to her friend’s safety, the massive wolf who had fled made his way back around. While Q proved too strong for the alpha male, the black doe seemed like the perfect opportunity for a kill… Especially with her back turned and seemingly presented for a good bite. The alpha stalked forward in the brush surrounding the now bloodied battleground they had created, the wolf’s fallen brethren and sisters dead or about to be pummeled by the massive stag. No, the wolf would not have it.

Eylisi was pleased to see her big oaf of a friend fighting what seemed to be the last of the wolves. As she went to turn back around, a sharp pain flooded through her flank as razor sharp teeth sunk in and ripped, causing her to scream out and buck wildly, kicking out her strong legs in an attempt to throw the creature maiming her. As soon as she was able to make it dislodge, she whirled around, only to jerk back and for the jaws to clamp into her neck, barely avoiding the precious windpipe and main arteries.

Her eyes flew open, whites visible in the glow of the fire as she fought and struggled, the wolf tearing the flesh and snarling. Blood pooled from the raw wound and Eylisi stumbled and quaked, letting out a pitiful cry as she collapsed into the ground, her blood pooling around her.

Q
It was the scream that froze Q in his place, a hoof held over the body as if to deliver a vengeful final blow.  The sound pulsed through his body, his blood turning to ice, his gut twisting into a knot.  He felt as though he moved in slow motion, whirling about to face the horrible sight awaiting him.  The alpha had returned, revenge set in it’s mind.  The stag witnessed her fall, the wolf than instantly scrambled to continue it’s savage attack.

Eylisi cried.

And something within him broke, an ancient tension in the back of his mind giving way, and from his maw, a roar louder than any he had ever uttered burst forth.  “NOOO!”  The flames from his antlers twisted and grew, tearing from above him until it swirled about his entire body, a wall of flame, and he stood at the center, with a face not even those most familiar to him would recognize.

The following moments passed as if Q was but a witness outside of his own body, he watched as his legs moved, as his antlers lowered, a single leap landing a blow on the alpha’s side, pulling him away from the doe, and tossing him like a tiny fawn against a tree.  This was no longer a battle for victory.  The wolf would pay.  It would pay dearly for every scratch and bite mark on her body.  The creature raised itself up, ready to continue, determination set in it’s eyes.

Q let himself go.  His rack swiped, and forelegs lashed out.  He felt claws touch his neck and sides, a bite landed his hind hock, but a swift kick once again sent the creature flying into the dark trees surrounding them. The sickly sweet stench of blood filled his nostrils, and the stag was upon him.  A stop broke a leg.  Then another.  And another, until the wolf cried, surely begging for mercy.

It was only then that he noticed the tears streaking his face, whether from anger or sorrow he could not say, but the searing, all-consuming need for revenge held its grasp upon his mind.  The white-hot flame followed an unbidden command, swallowing the downed creature as it thrashed against the bare earth.  “You never should have touched her,” he spat into the wailing.  The movement soon stopped, and he left the carcass to burn.

Q collapsed to his knees in the pooling blood beside the dark doe.  “Eylisi. . .” he whimpered, eyes scanning the damage done to her neck.  “Eylisi… please.”
