Actually I managed to style my hair almost like hers without cutting or shaving anything (check my Gazelle and Marceline hairstyle, it's practically the same). The problem is that you need agile hands (if you do know someone carry that person my photos, it could help) and a ton of pins and hairspraw for that. But if you manage to do that hairdo it will last you at least three days. I slept in it and nothing moved at all. XD
For a DIY I'd suggest to split the wet hair in two parts, but not even because you need more hair to make the tuft, the 'shaved' part has to be straightened with a brush while it's wet and kept against the scalp with pins, then you give volume to the tuft using rollers and you dry your hair off with the phon, then you remove the roller and make the hair all fluffy with your hands and hold the tuft still with a pair of pins. At least this is how my hairdresser did for me, but I never managed to put rollers in my hair alone.
