It is a common routine of rich people — to host lustrous balls for dignitaries. The houses and castles shine brightly from every window and doorway, loud, alluring yet calming music booms loudly from somewhere deep inside. A ball is always an event that attracts the brightest of people, who come to show their beauty and flaunt their high position. But such events often attract the attention of other people, filled with murky, dark thoughts.
To pass for an important guest you need to play your part well. No one would want to be ostracized for being 'unfit' for the occassion, but such guests have to keep their mask especially tight around their true selves.
Two met at this ball, by pure chance of course. Their eyes caught each other's gazes, attracting them closer for a friendly talk. The noisy, brass-colored world plunged into obscurity around them for a good while as they were busy with each other. They left the stuffy room to continue talking about the secular activities, continuing to behave as if they each had their own mansion. They did not care, or perhaps they didn't suspect, that both of them came to this ball for a different reason. The false masks around their true selves were glued on tight.
But the pleasure this conversation brought them was genuine.
