As with any critique I provide, I'll start with the positives and the things I like.
Overall, and at first blush, I am struck by this photograph. It feels 'real', which is not an easy thing to accomplish in a photograph. There is a depth of tone and a field of view that seem very natural to me. I feel like I'm looking out a window - and again, that isn't something, that I have found, is easy to accomplish with photography (which can mute colors, flatten tone, force a focal plane, etc). So yeah, I love that I can live in this photograph.
Specifics:
Framing - while I think that I might have cropped the bottom of the photo up just a bit, the framing of the subjects are really quite spectacular. Whether by accident or deliberate, the way that the trees are framed creates a visual dance. Two large trees (larger than any others) stand in shadow, anchoring one side of the shot - and notice how the luminescence drops off just to the right of them. In the middle you have two main evergreens standing on either side of this doorway leading back into the woods. Is it incidental that there is a patch of light/white directly in the center of the frame pulling us in? I doubt it. And then in a wonderfully subtle manner the fallen tree crosses the frame from upper left to lower right, creating a circular exploration for our eyes. So yeah, while I might have cropped the bottom of the photo, I wonder if I'd have had the vision to capture the framing.
Tone and Color - what an amazing tonal range. The piece is clearly just different shades of green (yes I'm dismissing the bits of brown). But the range of green is splendid. We have a lush bed of green right in the lower middle of the frame, that looks so soft and comforting that you want to go lay in it. The band of evergreens seem to be shrouded in this wonderful veil of mist and fog. It isn't enough to prevent us from seeing the trees (in fact it seems there is quite a bit of detail everywhere) but it add's a quiet calm across the it all. And that fog and mist takes and fades up into white as we move further away, which creates a sense of seclusion.
Extra Bit - The vignetting is subtle but appropriate. It is well executed, enough to focus the eye toward the middle and not enough to cause you to notice right away.
So call me impressed. I can't tell whether this was a everything just happening to come together at all the right times, or whether it was well orchestrated and manipulated. That is what I think is so impressive. I've seen this scene a million times when I'm hiking through the woods. I've tried to photograph it hundreds of times. It isn't easy to capture the essence and yet keep it so well seated in 'real'.
Well done!
