Description
Ocean Akula were first discovered when several specimen were discovered in a mass grave along the coast. Initially, the conclusion was that all the animals died due to the high acidification of the ocean. Further exploration of the waters however led to the discovery of a full pod alive and well. Tracking the animals proved difficult at first due to their speed but perserverance was rewarded with hope for the planet. The Ocean Akula showed no sign of malnourishment, meaning that there may be ample of healthy animals for the animals, who are also resisting the high acid levels, for them to feed on. Ocean Akula are resistant to the acidity thanks to a type of base coating secreted from their skin that neutralises the effects. The origin of this secretion was likely meant to counter the enzymes secreted by larger predators. That being said, something else must have killed that pod found on the coast.
Growing no longer than 40 centimeters, Ocean Akula grow no bigger than their sewer cousins. They also share their predatory lifestyle, keen hearing and armor-plated heads. The armor is larger as they are more prone to collide against rock formations when hunting near the coast for large animals. A succesful impact causes their mandibles to "clip" into the flesh of their prey. The combined impacts of a whole school of Akula will cause severe bloodloss or drowning as the added weight drags the prey under the surface. The ocean is a louder and larger environment than the sewers so it takes more than good hearing to locate food. Ocean Akulas also have chromatophores along their flank that changes color to message the other members of the school. This confirms that Ocean Akula, much like most of Tunjera's fauna, have excellent color vision. More research is necessary but this is what is known about Ocean Akula communication:
Blue = neutral/no information
Yellow = prey detected
Red = I want to mate
Orange = danger
From what is known so far, Ocean Akula follow a basic design for Tunjera's fish-like creatures. Their bodies is almost a trilateral symmetry, meaning they have three eyes, three hearts, a three-lobed brain etc. Their tail is actually three tentacles that remain close together to provide thrust when swimming. The fins can even flex and fold to change the direction in which they want to wave their "tail" in order to swim, whether it's up and down like a whale or side to side like a fish. The tentacles only split apart when males fight one another for the right to mate, or when females try to intimidate predators trying to eat the young. For both genders, the tip of the tentacles are equipped with sharp spikes that can cause serious harm to animals foolish enough to approach an Akula nursery.
