I'm so proud of this sucker that I had to show it to the world. Hope you don't mind.I spent a fair amount of time playing around with Paint Tool Sai yesterday, trying to figure out a more efficient process of adding a background and establishing mood. This image is the most successful product of yesterday's experimentation, forgoing habitual linework in favor of depth and atmospheric perspective through color and inadvertent brushstroke layering. The desert scenery developed naturally through loose blending with Sai's Marker tool, airbrushing added further colors, and I used Photoshop for textures and hue balance.
Oh, and the Pilgrim from "Journey" is there, too. A cactus didn't feel right, and the vibrancy of the setting just begged for a shout-out to Jenova Chen and his team.

I especially like that haze that appears to hug the ground, obscure the distance, and fade before reaching too high up into the sky.
