Sometimes you just need to make people understand and so, not much need for actually provoke a battle here. After all Sans is aware how this could end and so are we, so no thanks.
For those who have still wondering: Yes, Sans always remembered Gaster and he was also sure his father still existed somewhere, where he could not be reached. It was just easier for Sans to consider Gaster lost for good. Denial is a psychological reaction and defense-mechanism that helps to ease the pain and handling a trauma, something Sans had to endure way over his fair share. So by denying that there might have still be a slim chance to see his father ever again, it allowed Sans to carry and take care of Paps and himself. But he never forgot about Gaster or what happened to him.
