With his family facing financial crisis following the downfall of his father's career, it simply means they had more mouth to feed and less space to share, still they chose to believe that the boy would be another helping hand to support their family. Yet what they received was the opposite, Nathaniel proved to be a handful ever since he was a toddler. His terrible reaction to the ringing church bell brought nothing but unsavory rumors the family certainly did not want to deal with. When the boy was old enough to work alongside his brother in the factory, he was often found exhibiting similar, albeit worse, reaction that resulted in his permanent removal from work. The unusual yet horrid change in his physical appearance was the last nail, it wasn't long before his family began to see him as a liability and treated him as such.
Wanting to gain his family's recognition, the boy presented them a handful of coins produced with his newfound ability which was met with surprise ..and adoration. Nathaniel became the breadwinner ever since, and his father would provide him with lessons, particularly in studies of metallic elements, even letting him tinker with his past inventions and help him with his work to hone the boy's ability, particularly in metal manifestation and manipulation. In time, his family's life improved, but Nathaniel eventually came to the realization that his family had been treating him as a mere source of money, an assumption proven true upon finding out that the secluded life he was urged to pursue was meant to spare his family of the shame for keeping a creature like him under their roof.
The initial disgust bloomed into a sense of pride. Knowing that his family's prosperity lies in his hands, he began to toy with it. Nathaniel kept providing for the family, even when his father started selling their inventions to aid illegal activities for more wealth. It was then that he found an opportunity to jump ship, or rather, it found him. A certain fire Elemental came with the news that the Bureau was on his trail, but offered him a chance to contribute to its technological development in exchange for turning himself in. It was a fine deal for the man to start anew, and compromising his father's business was certainly not a problem.
His days at the Bureau wasn't half bad, but started to get turbulent when he was assigned to his first partner. Years of receiving familiar treatment prompted him to leave his human partner to die at the hands of rogues during one of their missions which he masked as an error in their calculation to the Bureau. His second assigned partner, Merideth, was a noblewoman with similar attitude, yet possessed certain qualities that sets her apart which eventually gained Nathaniel's respect and later, genuine support.
