Description Acrylic underpainting, finished in oil on canvas textured oil painting paper.

Standard A4.

$150 AU.

The way I painted the texture to the side of her made me think of white noise. So I thought about it and I thought well maybe She's trying to tell us that if we pray and listen, we can hear Her through the noise?

I had this feeling that with all the people in the world trying to talk to ghosts (yes I know it's forbidden which is why I felt this was a message from Heaven) that who we need to be listening to in the spirit world is God, Our Lord and Our Lady! That's what I believe the message is in this now that I've had time to reflect on it some more.

This painting is one of my favorite representations of Mary; you did such a lovely job of portraying her beauty and concern for us. There is sadness in her expression, but there is a quiet and serenity throughout the painting that is simply breathtaking.

Yes, my love for God and my faith as a Catholic/Christian is deep and very real. I devote most of my art to religious subjects and that is what I am most known and commissioned for

Just gorgeous!! What kind of canvas do you use? I am still really unfamiliar with the materials needed in oil painting.

Thank you wonderful lady What you see here has been painted on oil painting paper which I buy in a pad. It's fantastic for faster drying between thin layers because it absorbs so well.

Canvas takes longer, even with thin layers of paint because it's not as absorbant due to the gesso. Though I am now trying linen stretched on board and although it costs more, it's quite lovely to work on.

Building up with thin layers is fantastic for depth, especially when underpainting in acrylic to establish light and shadow. The thickest layer of oil should always be LAST because it won't cure properly if you paint too thick and try to paint over it again before it's cured properly, dried properly. It's always best to paint thin layers and then gradually work thicker.

Hope that helps. Oh and you thin down your oil with lean medium.

Theophilia In reply to Tahnja [2011-02-18 17:16:57 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, okay! I'll have to try and find some. I've been trying to get into oils, but I've never taken a class and so now I'm trying to figure out all of the real practical stuff by myself.

Okay, thickest last. I have a question though (or, rather several. ) When you first sketch down your idea on the canvas, I understand that most artists get detailed study sketches and then paint THAT rather than rely on the sketch on the actual canvas/paperboard, etc. So you just kind of paint over the whole thing in a wash? And what would you use to sketch out your idea? Pencil? I've used pencil but my sketches are always SUPER DETAILED (even when I try to keep detail to a minimum. ) and so the pencil turns the oils greyish. Last time (for the Medieval Twins picture) I drew it in pencil and then I put hairspray over it to keep it there. It worked fairly fine for the most part. So, what are the general paiting guidelines of oils? Paint from general to specific? I'm still in a watercoloring frame of mind and I know THAT is NOT how you use oils.

And what are the purposes of thinners? I don't have any linseed oil and am, just in general, rather limited in my oil painting tools, but I do have turpentine. And I've only used it thus far to clean brushes, but I understand that its also a paint thinner? So what is the benefit of using paint thinners? Do they add a certain glaze to the picture? Are there particular instances when you'd want to use thinners and when it would be really bad to?

Sorry for all of the questions. I should probably try to find some good books on the subject.
