Description

Edit: This is outdated, both designs and info but keeping this in the gallery if needing a referral for old stuff.

-----

"Sapient gryphon species - though most of gryphons are animals, there's six species total which have higher consciousness. Their lifestyle is natural like animals have, but are less or more magical and highly intelligent creatures.
Where they came from - that can't be explained with normal evolution. Is said that one day they just were there like they've always been, though they were not. Animal gryphons are product of evolution but these species were - maybe - just a random idea of Creator self."

Magicability level means something how much they're out of common laws of biology. Sometimes there's need for "a wizard did it" -factor, since technically most of them couldn't fly inside all common laws of physics.
And these gryphons here are very standard individuals, all males.

Species: Dracogryph (FI: draakkigriippi DE: der Drachengreif)
Physical appearance: Only fully scaled and biggest of all six gryphon species. They have huge wings and can fly well in wide spaces. Three toes per leg, though hind legs have a bit different toe structure. They are not very expressional, because their strong jaw muscles take space from other face muscles - they can't smile too well but bite with strong pressure. Dracogryphs grow up slowly and age slowly - matured in age of 50+ years, living time even 300-350 years.
Nature: The most calm ones regardless their rough appearance. Dracogryphs could be called even friendly. They are rather wise though they have a bit slow brain working.
Skills: They can breathe fire, just normal fire through chemical reaction. They can tolerate fire a short while too so misaimed breath won't kill a fellow individual. Dracogryphs have strong stomach with strong acid, and they can spit acid too if needed. Also, their tail spikes have some nerve poison. Poison strength varies individually. Commonly dracogryphs are immune to that poison but immunity also changes individually.

Species: Lupogryph (FI: lupogryfi DE: der Wolfsgreif)
Physical appearance: Smallest of all six gryphon species. They have very soft fur and round feathers. Their main colour is blue, amount of white area varies individually. Tail is long and fluffy, somewhat fox-like. They have only three toes per leg, front legs have a bit longer nails. No pawpads, but scaly soles. Good sense of hear and smell. Lupogryphs mature in age of ~15 and live up to ~60 years.
Nature: Friendly, cunning and curious. Small size gives some advantages, like agile movements, and it fits for their fast working thinking.
Skills: A such fast healing of minor wounds and they can see well in very little light.

Species: Leogriff (FI: jellonagriippi DE: der Löwengreif)
Physical appearance: Curly maned and golden in main colour. Their front legs are fluffy and partially scaled and very strong, hind legs are just...legs. They have long wings with a such common looking feathers. Matured after 15 years, living age ~65 years.
Nature: Really full of themselves. That tells about everything...
Skills: They have great aerial agility and minor static electricity skill.

Species: Tygregryph (FI: tiikerigriippi DE: der Tigergreif)
Physical appearance: Heavy shaped gryphons with strong beak and squareish, coarse feathers. Their biting pressure is the second best right after dracogryphs. Front legs have four tiger-style toes and scaly soles, hind legs are more scaly, not that heavy what front legs and a bit strange muscle structure. Good sense of smell. Main colour varies from orangeish red to purpleish red, stripes are different individually. Matured near 18 years, living time ~75 years.
Nature: Stubborn and somewhat reserved - these gryphons have doubts against everybody and anybody at first. They are usually calm and clever, but can turn aggressive and then there's hell around.
Skills: Resistance for some magical based curses, good physical tolerability. Some tygregryphs can master some magical based skills, like minor heat control or rising physical strength for a short while.

Species: Hippogriff (FI: hippogryfi DE: der Hippogreif)
Physical appearance: A such heavy shaped, often fluffy gryphons. Hind legs have hooves, front legs have three toes merged together (so they do not move separately) and a small sharp thumb. Main colour is white - varies from grayish to beigeish and to full white and blue hued white. Wings have sharp feathers, colour varies in blue and green hues. Matured near 18 years, living time ~75 years.
Nature: Think they are the best creatures of all, but that's too common among gryphons. Hippogriffs are also very boastful.
Skills: Fast regeneration even for hard wounds, able to do some air pressure changes and static electricity.

Species: Hellgriff (FI: hornangriippi DE: der Höllengreif)
Physical appearance: Short body, long legs, light looking bodyshape. Hellgriffs have long mane around neck and it continues over back to the half way of tail. Hind legs have split hooves -looking claws plus one curved spike on heel and front legs have three long and sharp claws plus one wrist spike. Main colour is dark purpleish or blueish, some individuals can be almost black. Hellgriffs don't have any kind of nostrils. These griffs mature after 20 years and live total 100-120 years.
Nature: Egotistic, narcissistic and somewhat hellish to anybody else of other species. Every individuals think they're the best. Only children and 100+ individuals give some more respect from others. Commonly they are very intelligent and learn things very fast.
Skills: Heavy arsenal of magical tricks and immunity/resistance against them. Hellgriffs are almost out of normal laws of physics. They can handle energy much better than any other gryphon species.

¤ Pencil lines, coloured in Photoshop. Gryphons originate from old myths and nobody really have rights for generic "gryphon" concept. Just these certain designs are mine.

hey does that mean if we were to make one we couldn't use the breeds ? or just the draw designs you did ?

Designs and information are mine. All names (except hellgriff) are purely derived from scientific names some way (same ideology as in the good old "hippogriff"). So even if I made the names now, I'm surely not the first one who used thataway to name gryphons. Overall combining some mammal + bird and calling it some sort of gryphon is common.

Sysirauta In reply to RedLotusPony [2013-10-29 19:26:37 +0000 UTC]

I created and own the designs. But if you ask with that something like did I create a hippogriff concept - no. Gryphons are thousands of years old creatures and no one owns the concept itself. Only one which I can call my own concept is Hellgriff, as it doesn't appear anywhere and is not "a combination of a bird and some other know creature/animal".

Wow, this is fantastic, you have a good imagination for these things. Wold be great if you make a Digimon based in a Hippogriff and other in a Tygregryphon, Caracamon, Archamon and Proaramon style, with his evolutions. Definitely if you does not want to, no one forces. I just think it would be great.

The problem in the beginning was that there is an official hippogriff digimon, I didn't want to create another.

Fair enough. Gryphon kittens can't fly till they're 1/3 of a year old in most tales

Thaaaat is fine for animals, these guys need 15-60 years to be mature (intelligence needs time). Maybe it's just me but I have always doubted stories where sapient creatures are mature in a time span which an average rabbit needs to be old enough to reproduce.

This is highly inspirational, but I have a question...by self-conscious, do you mean self-aware? Self-conscious is usually used to denote a shy attitude or disposition.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sysirauta In reply to Izzyosaur [2011-12-25 14:03:57 +0000 UTC]

Self-conscious
▷ adj
1 unduly aware of oneself as the object of the attention of others; embarrassed
2 conscious of one's existence

I've used that always in the second meaning. I'm pretty sure in this case self-conscious is better than self-aware...yet I can't think them too widely since English is not my first language.

Well I finally read that Xd. I have a doubt, what is the species of Lord ô.o? None of those have snake tail...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sysirauta In reply to SheeKNS [2010-02-11 15:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Giant snake-tailed gryphon. Snaketails were animals...means, have mainly senses instead of wide logical thinking, grow faster, etc... As told, Lord was "just an animal" before that little accident.
...I have some thought about some animal gryphons too...but they're mainly a such "normal" looking, not that brightly coloured, under all laws of physics and biology, blahblah... Self-conscious gryphons about hate animal gryphons. xp

SheeKNS In reply to Sysirauta [2010-02-11 21:38:16 +0000 UTC]

So gryphons that aren´t part of this species are considerated like "animals". Heh, I forgot that detail of Lord´s history (I read it many time ago xD)

Big projects eat not only time but artistic mood too :<

But this species reference is just pure
If you´d do a poll about “what is your favorite gryphon species” I couldn´t click any because I have 4 favorites all on the same level xP These species are nice <3

I wonder what gave Zyreus that nice feather crow. None of those species seem to have any similar big feathers on their head. He have had some pretty individual parents |X

And Hor is really a pure blooded Dracogryph. Because that male one here looks really pretty similar

Lovely strange gryphons are nice <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sysirauta In reply to Royal-Manda [2010-02-07 21:23:50 +0000 UTC]

And finally I have some reference to show when "this is a part of this and this"...blah, my "main" gryphon characters are just well mixed (and some parts are not even gryphons...I mean a half of Fayza and that 1/8 of Zyreus). <_< I have an idea what was Zyreus' greatgrandfather but it's nothing yet revealed...
That means Rafael is, what...1/8 dracogryph, 1/16 hellgriff, 1/16 you-know-what, 7/64 hippogriff, 3/32 lupogryph, 1/32 tygregryph, 1/64 something different aaand 1/2 giant snake tailed gryphon. ... Horrendous. Especially when there are many minor things which effect, like hellgriff's genome is very dominant, dracogryph's genome is very recessive, etc. etc. ... My mind seems to love complexity. ... Raffy, you are HARD!

Compared to Hor, this one has straight neck, darker colours, horns bend differently and most possibly much minor differences.

Do I talk too much? If I do, just throw me with an eraser.
Take a cookie.

Royal-Manda In reply to Sysirauta [2010-02-08 15:37:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah oaky Zyreus 2/8 is not Gryphon. That explains the feathers on his head |X
And Raffy is simply the ultimate combination :> Now only Leogriff is missing and he´d be a combination from everything xP

Ah I have another random question about gryphons in genera: Why is it called Dracogryph but Leogriff?
Does it have any special meaning or is it just a variance for fun for the names? :>

Cookies :> Someday my weight will raise because of too many of them |X

Sysirauta In reply to Royal-Manda [2010-02-08 15:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it was just a damn weird feathered critter.
...Leos didn't fit anywhere anymore...

I dunno. Actually it's so-so how people want call them, that's just how I've got used to use those names. Nothing epic behind it.

And a fitness club licence.
