I dunno, never played SH1. I've just played SH4, and there IS a cat in that one. Actually, it's a bloody mass of flesh that meows in your fridge, but, hey.

This was the cat you'd basically find, when walk into a locker room, and hear rattling in one of the lockers, creepy music comes, you open the locker and boom: cat.
