If there was one downside with Disney when doing adaptations is their likeliness to remove potentially interesting characters from the sources.

True. But then again, the movie time restrain means they inevitably need to cut a lot of material when they are adapting books.
What they did to Frozen's original story, tho, is kind of unforgivable

Also in addition to my first reply, there was this Russian film adaptation(Bambi’s Childhood 1985) of Bambi which although it had this awkward part of having humans in place of deer, even it actually decided to feature Gobo in someway.
More it’s just even Walt himself who was behind removing Gobo.

I think the technical restraints of the time also might have played some part in it. Most of their movies were just over 1h long and that is already considered an amazing accomplishment for a animated film made in the 1930's/40's. Had they included Gobo's plot it would've stretched far beyond that and maybe made things too unfocused, which for a book isn't so bad, but a movie... As it stands, it's just Bambi's story. In the book, I would say they kind of share it, even if Bambi still is the main character.
I have heard of the Russian live-action adaptation, but never watched it. The fact that it's a bunch of people definetly seems... weird. Like, who are the hunters then, another kingdom or something? Bandits? Cossacks? Have you seen it yourself? Is it good?
I also never heard of that movie Holes. Stange. Freaking Disney movie with Sigourney Weaver and Shia LeBeouf???

A philosophical approach with Bambi definetly sounds really interesting.
Who knows, someone could try to remake it one day, with a more adult approach. That would be awesome.
I usually watch most things Disney put out as they are generally entertaining, even if not in any way profound and just very commercial, as you said. Their only new product that I genuinely enjoy and would defend as good is Star Wars. The Last Jedi specifically, I really liked that movie. I like the Avengers stuff too, I think it's fun.
I'm kind of pissed off about the "Live Action remakes", though.
Sorry for taking so long to respond, I've been off from DA for a while now.

I did a typo when I said “as opposed to adapting Bambi’s” it was supposed to finish as “Bambi’s Children”(second book). Though there is a comic adaptation done by Dell Comics or something I believe.

Well, an hour and ten minutes does seem short for film standards, though I have heard WW2 had them cut off like 10-12 minutes. Also, Disney is rarely close to the sources either way. The only faithful Disney adaptation I know is Holes a majority of that is like a word for word straight translation to its book even featuring pretty much all the characters.
