Dr. Jonathan Crane was a professor of psychology at Gotham University. There, he conducted unethical experiments on his students and used their terror and trauma to develop his fear toxin. As the terrorist known as the Scarecrow, he sold his toxin on the streets before trying to poison all of the Gotham’s water supply, only to be stopped by Batman and Robin.
