Tsk-tsk, standing on the tracks are we? I'm guessing that sound is joined by the high-pitched squealing of the rails as well? I hear that sometimes even before I have any idea there's a train coming, and sometimes even when I'm completely involved in another shot.

Yeah that high pitched pinging sound is a good way to detect movement in welded rail territory. As the rails depress under the weight of the train they emit that noise which becomes more intense as the train becomes closer. Don't count on it as a safety feature, but it's just one of the many things that can keep you informed if your alert to your surroundings. You wont notice that sound in jointed rail territory though nearly as much as welded.

Well I guess I'm lucky that I live in an area dominated by CWR. But I guess if that doesn't wake you up to the train, and the horn doesn't either, then the earthquake you're about to feel will.

Also lucky for me is that I tend to shoot in areas that are flanked by whistle posts and long straight lengths of track. Kinda sucks for getting decent shots of trains on curves though, and the vegetation right up to the ballast edge makes it even worse...
