Description
Chi You is regarded by some as the Hmong king who led them against the Chinese armies in 26 BC. They fought over the fertile lands against the Yan and Yellow Emperor, the predecessor to the Han people. Chi You was regarded as the Ox King and a god of war among his enemies due to his ferocity in battle. He won 9 major battles and 80 skirmishes against the Yellow Emperor. Only with the combined might of two imperial armies did Chi You's army lose the 10th battle.
With their advance metal swords, Chi You was said to be a master swordsman that fought like a demon with 8 arms. He commanded supernatural powers and could exude fog from his body to hide his army. Maybe this inspired the saying "fogs of war". Chi You’s defeat was attributed to the Yellow Emperor making a compass that helped him navigate through the thick fog.
After his beheading on the field of battle, his three sons took the remaining people and split them apart. The eldest took his people south, the middle son took his people north while the youngest stayed and assimilated into Chinese society. The Hmong people are descendants of the ones that went south and eventually ended up in South East Asia.
