Description Opening gala for BC Fashion Week - Spring 2010 season.

The event was held at an upscale boutique in Vancouver's historic gastown, so I figured it was going to be all high-fashiony and boring as hell (as usual)

I was really only there to pick up my pass, but was delighted when this group of capoeristas started to perform. Not only that, but I was in the perfect spot to catch the action.

I was forced to shoot with a flash, but I like it here..

If you want to see more, I posted an entry on my website with 35 shots from the night!

Also note that this was shot at 18mm and is not cropped

I had the opportunity to shoot an outdoor Capoeira event a few months back. I found that it is incredibly difficult to catch the action cleanly with the people all around, waiting their turn.
And that is why this shot works so well. The darkness vanishes a lot of what would be distracting back detail, especially in the upper part, allowing the flashlighting to really focus our attention on the foreground interest. Those guys really know how to flip, it is quite something to watch, but quite another to decently capture this remarkable feat of movement.

This guy in mid-air, brightly lit so we can see all those muscles demonstrating their concert, to marvel at the way the human brain can gracefully blend all those movements with the concentration of the eyes, scanning the surroundings to check the landing, his opponent's location, eyes also betraying the underlying training and discipline - and all happening in half a second.

That plus a really well-chosen location to shoot from, giving the nice white line of guys on the right to lead our attention into and frame that side of the picture. A great mix of a fascinating subject, in shooting conditions that you have discerned to bring out their best plus some lovely crisp, contrasty B&W.

Thank you, for proving to me that it CAN be done! I shall look forward to my next Capoeira opportunity with a fresh flush of ideas in mind!

Thanks for the great critique!

Flash is definitely needed, if you cant muster 1/200-400th..

agreed, but rather than just for sharpness, I felt that the flash really picked on the guy nicely to help him stand out over the rest of the picture... I used to do theatre lighting

haha, nah you weren't really out of line. lots of people were surprised by that. i was a little hurt, since i looked up to him a lot, but whatever. i wasn't hinting that you manipulated it at all... it was actually a compliment.
