Whenever I hear people say Simba is the villain in Lion King 2 or is a complete jerk, I respond with 'Well how would you feel if in your childhood, your father was killed by your uncle and blamed you for it for years?' Simba is utterly justified in the sequel and it is an element not often explored in Disney sequels at all!

He doesn't want to contain Kiara, he just doesn't want her to suffer what he had to do endure in his life. The outsiders teamed up with a lion who made the Pridelands suffer for years and he was after all the same lion who killed his dad in the most horrific way possible! Scar also made Simba believe he was the cause of his father's death.

It also help the sequel focus as well on Simba as it does with Kiara and Kovu. You often see in the characters from the first films get pushed to the sidelines like in Lady and the Tramp 2 Lady only appears very less compared to the screen-time she had in the first film and Eric in the Little Mermaid 2 hardly appears despite his actions in the first film. Lion King 2 tried to balance it out with showing Simba go through his own arc in the second film with trying to reason with himself on what is best for his daughter and the kingdom. He tries to indeed get along with Kovu and figure the right way forward.

Basically things are not all black and white in some Disney sequels as we are led to believe.
