Description
-A Guinness-class battle cruiser undergoing final assembly on Freeport.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the Terran-Vorla war of the 2900s, a large group of Human, Mi'arr, and Ankalli citizens left disillusioned by the way fled Alliance and the Milky Way behind in search of a new home. They would travel in a fleet of over a thousand ships, bypassing thousands of galaxies in an attempt to get as far away from Earth as physically possible.
After almost a century of travel, the colony fleet arrived at an ideal star system with three habitable worlds in the Galaxy NGC 7172 on the edge of the Delphinus Void. The 4th and 5th planet in the system were already habitable, with the 3rd needing some minor terraforming before it could be habitable.
The 5th, and central hub of this new colony was dubbed "Freeport"
And would become the capital of their new empire, which they would grow and expand at an astonishing rate over the next two centuries. From a single-system colony to an intergalactic power in just a few hundred years, building on the knowledge and technology that their ancestors had acquired, they spread out quickly to other star systems and near-by galaxies. All the while maintaining radio-silence with the Terran Alliance who had, by this point all but forgotten that such a voluntary exodus ever took place.
In the 3500s, the Alliance launched the Infinite Frontiers mission to explore further out than anyone had before and catalog every species encountered along the way. Two weeks after officially departing Terran controlled space, the exploration ship Enterprise would detect techno-signatures from an unknown species the NGC 7172 galaxy and set a course to intercept.
When they arrived, they were shocked to find a massive civilization living there made up of Humans, Mi'arr, Ankalli, and several other species that had never been encountered by the Alliance. They called themselves the "Voidrunner Republic"
And from what the crew of the Terran ship could see, were a well established intergalactic civilization of their own right. The meeting between the two was awkward, but not hostile and after a brief conversation between the Enterprise crew and her crew continued onward.
Founded mainly on the principles of anarcho-capitalism, the VR was much more loosely associated than the Terran Alliance. Where one factions' region may have strict rules and regulations regarding every aspect of life, The one right next to may be totally lawless and uncivilized.
Slavery, sex trafficking, and violent piracy are all major problems within VR space as there is little finical incentive to stop it. Those who engage in such activities have financial incentive to keep it going, and generally are better funded than any vigilante group who aims to curtail it.
There is a small, centralized naval force known as the Voidrunner Republican Navy, or VRRN; There are many within it who are good at heart and want to do right by their people; But it's as corrupt as an organization can be. Often supplying ships, aide, and weapons to pirate cells in exchange for a cut of the loot.
Freeport Star Systems (FSS) is often called the "Starlite Aerospace of the VR"
Nearly the entire VRRN is composed of FSS-built starships and small craft. Their claim to fame, so to speak is the FSS 9987-B Superdragon III. Better known as the Malcom Guinness-class battle cruiser after the first VRRN Admiral to die in battle.
By Terran standards, it's classified a light cruiser or possibly a heavy battle frigate, but to the Voidrunner commonwealth, she's the pride of their civilization. Heavily armed and armored with a quad-layered shield grid and
double redundancy on nearly all systems expect the engine; They can dish out serious damage, and take it as well.
These have, also become a favorite among pirate groups. The lack of any real structure means that these ships are often stolen by military leadership right out of the shipyard and given directly to the highest bidder.
Voidrunner pirates are known throughout the cosmos as being some of the most ruthless and brazen. Because they are so spread out and decentralized. Entire pirate cultures have cropped up along popular trade routes. At first, most of them resorted to piracy out of necessity.
They accidentally created a hyper-competitive culture with zero room for anything but self-advance. Not many Voidrunners are going to bring you free food out of the goodness of their heart, and those that do will be taken advantage off.
So those who choose poorly and picked a planet that bares no crops or has exceptionally harsh winters are basically left to die or find a way not to. For many, Piracy was their only means of survival. Over the years, they needed it less and less to survive and it became a religious activity with deep ritual meaning behind it.
These pirate death cults were, and are one of the scariest group of beings you can encounter among the stars. They have no fear of death and once they've locked you in their sites. You're going to die, or they are. They often don't even plunder the ships anymore, they simply get on board and kill the crew only to let the ship and it's cargo drift into infinity.
They're not however, totally foolish about it and will not attack a vessel they know they cannot defeat. To say someone "Fired on the Dreadnought" is a to say they performed an act so blindly stupid that they deserved the outcome, no matter how brutal it was.
The phrase first attributed to Voidrunner pirates in the 3700s, when a small pirate cell of only three small ships attempted to intercept and intimidate a UESN heavy cruiser and it's entire battle group in Terran space. Needless to say, that didn't end well for the pirates, and even their own cult brethren disavowed their actions.
Terran warships are measurably superior vessels, but VR ships are not to be underestimated. They can, and will defeat a Terran ship in a similar weight class such as the Enterprize-class frigate or Morris-class destroyer if said ship lets it's guard down.
The Terran Morris-class is lightly armored, so in a direct slugging match, gun to gun. The Guinness-class would likely win every time. Against the Enterpirze-class, not so much. They're built to take hits and keep coming.
