So ask questions if there's anything that you want to know more about, kay?
I might just make a mini tutorial for ya.
Also, gotta give a shout out to this brush set. I used like...only two of them in this for texture in the bg, then ended up painting over it anyway lol, but they are very very amazing brushes!
I normally don't use brushes I didn't make, but these are great

Things like that are always useful (even though I never get beyond step 1, whenever I try to improve a raw sketch I either make it look worse or just not like what I intended to draw, 
As for a description, check this, a daily deviation: [link] It's a little different from yours, I know, but then, it's just to give an example on how to describe the steps with words. I might try to help you, too (as I know part of the theory at least).

Its not so much that I SUCK at explaining things, I'm just too lazy to haha. Tutorials take a long time to set up and type out when you explain things hahaha.

There might be stuff in GIMP which could make my life easier, I just didn't figure out yet how to use it ... (I'm using the pencil like it was a real pencil ... as soon as I get the black outlines halfway right I intend to use the brush like it was a real brush ...)

Gimp is a pretty amazing program.
I don't use it often because of the sheer amount of other programs I use, but thac that you can customize it is great.

Well, there are patches you can add, like Gimp-Paint-Studio. You can add brushes, edit your layout, theres even a patch to make the interface look like photoshop.

when creating a background, do you prefer doing a more planned out bg or a simple kinda of bg that doesnt take that much effort? and does it depend on the picture?
im pretty much just looking a personal pref XD

I'm kinda new at bg painting. I don't really plan them, I just block stuff in and see what looks good. I'll add to it what I think needs adding, then refine little by little.
