I just happened to stumble across one of that guys works and was like wow cool! Then was browsing through popular submissions and noticed one that looked just like it. So I notified both this morning and yeah, this kid ripped them off. Then I noticed your submission in popular things, or deviantstore, I can't remember, and liked it so I checked out your gallery, and saw this. So that's how I came to find it. I hope that this is yours, I'm assuming so because that kid is already a proven thief and this is conducive to your overall style [AND REALLY BEAUTIFUL BY THE WAY].

This is glorious ... If you haven't seen the children's book 'The Red Tree' by Shaun Tan go have a read in your local book store .. this image just brings the whole book straight back to my mind

Very nice work.
I could be wrong but I think the way the image has been achieved (the way I would have done so anyway) is use photoshop to make a copy of the image on a new layer. Desaturate this new layer. Add a layer mask and paint back in the colourful tree colours so that on the top layer you have the background trees desaturated and on the original layer the nice Autumn coloured tree. This layer was probably also corrected for colour as well. The light can be done in many ways but by far the easiest would be to make a copy of the original layer again and 'Gaussian' blur it not massively but enough and then place this layer at the top in Screen mode and again add a layer mask to paint out the bits that you don't need.
I could be wrong but this is the way I would have tackled that image.
