Description This is a piece I did for my portfolio, that is still a bit different from what I'm doing now, but I'm still quite fond of because of the fantastical yet somehow dark aspect to it.
I remember this was one of the pieces that looked like it was going to be incredibly weak in comparison to the others, but when I finished it, I and so many people enjoyed it.

I love this! What I feel when I see this piece is that both the dead and the living want to find peace or they want to feel life. Another feeling I get from this is that the dead and the living want to be closer to one another, especially when a loved one dies. One or the other idk XD. Also the way you shaded the arm and hand and the details on the decomposing hand looks so real. Beautifully done~

Creepy. Β The way you shaded the hands and arms give them depth and life. Β It must have taken a while to do the highlights on the bones, the detailing is so subtle.

Definitely amazing piece of art. I love how moths are done and how you made decaying of left hand.Β
Anyway I guess that thumbs are bit in lower position or maybe hand/fingers are bit longer. But that's not a problem of this fabulous work. Brilliant! Β

I always like the use of colored pencils, but stick ot blacks, whites, and greys. The detail on the moths is especially nice and this all looks very good on that sepia-toned paper.

I'm slowly becoming addicted to sketching on the toned paper lol
Just like I mentioned to someone else, I looks up many pictures of hands to try and get them right, I;m glad yo think they came out successfully.

I like the way the picture at first glance is a tranquil scene with some nice butterflies, and then you get the - very unexpected - horror element of the picture (or at least that was the way it worked for me).

From this aspect it does somewhat remind me of some of the work of one of my favorite illustrators, Hans Arnold.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SRosarioArtist In reply to PeKj [2014-05-01 06:47:54 +0000 UTC]

I haven't heard of him, but thank you very much for letting me know, as I am always excited to look at new artists and work I haven't seen before.

It's interesting, because since I created it, the "realization" isn't there fore me and sometimes I think its obvious, and then people tell me they had to look twice and that makes me excited, because I love art that has multiple element that you can observe and discover something new the seconds time.

PeKj In reply to SRosarioArtist [2014-05-01 15:30:45 +0000 UTC]

Hans Arnold was well known for his illustrations here in Sweden (he had a career of about 50-60 years and died a few years ago), but I don't know how much recognition he had internationally.

Sometimes people find things in the stuff you do that you really never thought about. That can be quite funny.

Absolutely beautiful, and touching, and haunting. Wow. I have no words. I looked at this yesterday night and couldn't even type a comment before starting to cry for what was probably at least an hour. I had to dig through the forums again this morning just to find this piece because I cried myself to sleep before I could even bookmark this page. As a person who has been grieving for a year and a half and often wonders about the possibility of reconnecting with a loved one in the afterlife... this really hits me hard. I really can't explain with words how I truly feel about this piece. I especially love the one moth on the finger on the hand on the right, gives off a sense of hopefulness, maybe redemption even. This definitely won't be the last time I look at this.

A lot of my poetry sends a very similar message to this (or at least how I interpreted this piece of yours) so you're definitely welcome to take a look if this piece was inspired by similar thoughts of your own.

On a more positive note, by having made me cry myself asleep, you've also cured my insomnia for now.

This comment is very special to me. When I read it this morning I was very sad to hear of your loss, but happy that I was able to connect you (a stranger) through an art peice.
I often talk about wanting to connect with people through my art, as well as start conversations.

I was reminded of a quote that went something like "The purpose of art is not to portray happiness, but to evoke it."
If my artwork is able to produce thoughts and emotions, I am beyond accomplished.

I'm humbled that you felt the way you did.

I thank you for such a lovely and touching comment.

I hope you get better rest from now on

Your quote explains it perfectly. Art goes far beyond the ages-old "a picture is worth a thousand words" thing and this is a perfect example of that. All the words in the world ever said or written couldn't portray the same imagery, or provoke the same thoughts quite as vividly as this drawing. For lack of a better way of saying it: "You haven't said anything, but I know exactly what you mean."
