“Alright, you lot,” PK said, getting the attention of the number of pokemon that she’d momentarily called over to her. She turned to Persia and Penumbra. “Okay, we have here several Merchant teams, and workers from Champ Construction Co. There’s Team Portal, Team Cardinal, Team Parachute and Team Strange. I know... I’m aware of the fact that perhaps some from the other guilds have been looking at us in a bad light recently, after everything that’s happened with Sorbet... Show them what we’re made of, alright? That we can do things right.” PK turned back to address the other teams. “This is Persia, from Team Slow Melody, and Penumbra from Varekai. I’m sure they’ll be happy to lend a foot, or wing, wherever it’s needed. Alright, I’ve got some business I need to attend to, so I’ll leave you all in the capable hands of the builders from the city. They know what I want done, so I’d appreciate it if you helped them any way you could. Thanks guys. I’ll be around.” And with this, PK turned to leave.

As the four other teams went back to work, Persia and Penumbra hesitated for just a moment, watching their leader leave. The two of them couldn’t help but notice the way that the kecleon’s tail drooped, the way her footsteps seemed heavy, and the way her shoulders where tensed.

“Poor PK,” Penumbra said sadly. “She’s got so much responsibility. So much pressure. So much to live up to, and so much to fix. It doesn’t seem fair, Persia. She’s done so much already, and now even more is being asked of her. And I still can’t... I can’t believe how many have left. I wish we could help her. I wish she wasn’t so alone.” The two of them were still gazing in the direction PK had headed, even though she was out of sight now.

“I know Pen. It isn’t fair. How were any of us to know that things would end up like this?” The hippopotas shook her head. “But we can help her, Pen, by being the best Merchants we can be! We’ll work as hard as we can to help fix the village. And she’s not alone. Just like you and I aren’t alone, even though our friends have gone. You and I still have each other, and PK has Malt. Just look Pen!” The hippopotas finally turned, as did the tranquill, and their eyes swept over the hardworking teams. “PK has us too. And we’ll all do our best for her, because she deserves nothing less.” Persia paused for a moment, losing herself in thought. When she spoke again, her voice was softer, and there were the subtlest hints of regret and sorrow lacing her words, which led Penumbra to believe that she wasn’t just talking about PK any more. “Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Nobody is perfect. You can hold mistakes against those who wrong you, or you can forgive them. Embory forgave me, and in time, I will forgive her and Meranda for leaving the way they did. It may be the more difficult thing to do, because some part of you has been hurt, but in the long run, it’s easier, and better. After all, how can you expect to be forgiven when you make a mistake, or mess something up, when you don’t first forgive?”

---------

The two of them made their way over to the other teams, and properly introduced themselves, and then they sought out Mason and Mica, two of the construction workers, and received instructions from them. Persia got to work straight away, pulling heavy building materials to places where they were needed, and Penumbra, for the first time in her life, proved to be very useful, and played an important role, serving as both a messenger and a carrier of supplies.

As a whole, the group of Merchants toiled together, day after day. The village was cleaned up, the buildings damaged beyond repair were torn down, and the debris removed. Skeletons of buildings began to crop up, land was cleared and foundations were laid. Tao Village was being reborn, rebuilt, reorganised from the ground up. And there was something special, about seeing PK’s plans come together in real life, and that Penumbra and Persia were a part of it, well, it made them feel proud of themselves, proud of their fellow Merchants, and proud of their who had stuck with them. Because despite the exhaustion, despite their tired and aching bodies, the hippopotas and the tranquill came to see themselves in a way they never had before.
Penumbra’s wings grew strong, and it became impossible to tell that she was still rather an inexperienced flier, who had only recently spread her wings and taken to the air. The tranquill herself, while at first being more comfortable running around on the ground, soon found the nerve (it largely came from the kind words of Persia, who always had something encouraging to say) to fly with materials adding extra weight. And it wasn’t as hard, or as scary as she had believed it would be. In fact, one of the other Merchants, an Altaria named Thea, proved to be a rock and an inspiration to Penumbra. If Penumbra’s load became too heavy for her to manage, Thea would be there, to lighten her burden. Penumbra wasn’t all that surprised when one morning, she woke up and got to work, and realised that flying came naturally to her now, as naturally as running did, as naturally as drawing breath. And now that she was no longer afraid of heights, and was physically able to fly, something about being up in the air, with Thea not too far away, humming melodiously under her breath, helped her hold on, helped her let go. And in the days that would come, thanks to a heatran, a wingull and an altaria, Penumbra would learn to enjoy and excel at soaring through the clouds, and be just as capable and at home as she was when running through wet grass. She would come to fly just as often as she ran. She would come to love it just as much.

And Persia, she watched her friend from the ground, with eyes that gleamed with joy. Look how far you’ve come, Penumbra she would say inside herself, as she hauled great beams of wood along, or helped pull thick, taut ropes, or dig in the place where the fountain had once stood, because the construction crew were curious. She noticed that Pen was quiet, lost in thought a lot of the time, and figured out that the words she’d said to the tranquill earlier had given her a lot to think about. It was only after several of the new buildings had gone up, and the new bones of most of the other buildings gleamed in the afternoon sunlight that Persia paused where she was, and looked back at the beam she was pulling along, and really saw it. Wow. Look how far I’ve come, myself. She lifted her gaze, smiling, as Penumbra flew overhead. Then, she turned, and continued onwards, leg muscles stronger than ever. Let’s show them just how far we can go, Pen.

---------

“There you are!” Persia and Penumbra lifted the heads at the sound of PK’s voice, their eyes weary, their bodies exhausted, but there were smiles of satisfaction on their lips, because they’d proven to be very helpful in the past week or so, assisting in the rebuilding of Tao Village.
“What can we do for you, PK?” Penumbra got to her feet, shaking her wings out.

“Actually, it’s Persia I came for. See, I have this job, and only she can do it…” The Merchant Leader trailed off, her attention settling elsewhere for a moment. It was only when Persia rose to her feet and approached that the kecleon focussed back on the two of them. “You see, there's this big block of stone that I need help moving, and, while I have several options as to who could move it for me, you are the first, Persia. You’ve proven to be a loyal, dedicated Merchant. You’ve been working really hard these past couple of months, and I reckon you’d be more than capable of this.”

“Yeah, sure. I’d love to help any way I can, PK. Where is this block of stone?” Persia tilted her head as PK hesitated.

“Well, you see… It’s waiting at the Lake. I was going to have it brought here directly, but the water I’ve had diverted here is too shallow at the moment, and I can’t wait much longer. I wouldn’t ask this of you, but, what with things not going according to plan...” She shook her head slightly. “And, it’s a really… really big block of stone. If you’re going to do this, Persia, you need to…” PK brought a scroll of paper out from behind her back. “Evolve.”

“What?!” Persia stared at PK, shocked. “H-How could you ask something like that of me?” She backed away, only to have PK take a step towards her.

“Don’t you realise that I wouldn’t ask this of you if I didn’t need to? Wouldn’t use up a scroll? You... You are the best option for this, Persia,” PK said, her tone sharp. “I’m really desperate here. In the time when we need them most, pokemon are leaving us to manage by ourselves. Someone has to fix the village, and everyone immediately looks to me. It’s so hard Persia, and maybe I don’t want to do it. But someone has to, and no-one else will. So guess what? The burden falls to me, and I gotta fix it.” Her gaze was hard and flat. “I didn’t ask for this, Persia, but everyone is counting on me. And I need to know if I can count on you.” PK’s voice had dropped, but remained steady and strong.

“Please, PK, just give her a little time. I understand what it’s like… Just, let me talk to her please.” Penumbra’s golden eyes beseeched the kecleon. While PK had been talking, Penumbra had closed the distance between herself and Persia, and was doing her best to comfort her friend.

“Fine,” PK said after a moment. She turned away, clutching the evolution scroll in her hand. “The sun will be setting soon, so it’s not like we’ll be losing daylight.” She began to walk away, only pausing to give the two Merchants several last words. “I’ll come and find you tomorrow morning, at dawn. You have until then to decide, Persia. There’s still much to be done.” And with this, she left them.

Penumbra turned to say something to the hippopotas, but her wings drooped sadly upon seeing that Persia had already wandered off, her feet dragging, her head hanging low. Shaking her head, the tranquill did the only thing she could. She followed Persia, just like she always would.
