Description Tamino, the protagonist from Mozart's "Die ZauberflΓΆte," or in English, "The Magic Flute." Tamino is the protagonist, but no one really cares. That's because we're too distracted by CHARACTERS WITH PERSONALITY (*cough Papageno and Papagena cough*), and that scary-ass Queen of the Night (bitch).

Still, I'm trying to like Tamino. I really am. He's the idealistic portrait of how a man should behave like a manly man, which, in the eyes of the Era of Enlightenment, includes such things as:
- Not talking to your girlfriend
- Playing the flute
- Prancing around with a guy who dresses in nothing but feathers
- Announcing to everybody that you're a prince
And last, but not least,
- Pledging yourself to chastity.

"Welcome to the man's club. We have........books. And cute little dioramas with the sun and planets.
Oh, but to earn this, you have to pass through trials of the elements: fire, water...and you also have to--"
"What about earth and air?"
"Shut up, Tamino; you're not a man yet. You don't GET an opinion."

And of course, what is the ideal man supposed to say? Yes. He says, "That sounds like a good idea!" and brings his feather-brained friend along with him.

Anyway, I've always thought Tamino was a little spacey, like he doesn't really understand how the world works. That little drawing in the upper left corner was drawn during one of his derpiest dreamy songs, "Wie Stark ist Nicht Dein Zauberton," in which he charms a bunch of wild animals with none other than his magic flute.

The lower left picture is Tamino finding injustice in something, although I like to think of it as the expression he makes when someone points out that he fainted at the very beginning of the opera because he was scared of a snake.
"EXCUSE me, that snake was one hundred feet long and had teeth the size of my arms!"
Yeeeeeah........but you still fainted.

The entire Magic Flute opera is available for listening here, but it's entirely in German and with no subtitles: [link]
In other words, it's delightful.
No but really, the singers are just incredible.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT! The last three minutes of that recording are a song I've NEVER heard before!!! Guess who it features? Daz right, our man Tamino. Sounds like he's pining for Pamina's love because he's asking where she is. Sounds like Sarastro is with him, too. What IS this?! I've never experienced this part of the opera before! SOMEONE ENLIGHTEN ME!!!

SECOND EDIT: The last three minutes are a song that would normally have taken place just before "Wie? Wie? Wie?" and is a duet between Tamino and Papageno. Now, the question is, why is this always cut? It seems to be a very rare song that the majority of productions cut from their performances. Now the thing I wish to be enlightened on is why this is. Gentlemen?

THIRD EDIT: It was not determined whether or not the piece "Pamina, wo bist du?" was actually authentic Mozart or not, and if it was, he clearly decided to cut it from the production. A wise choice, some say.

hehe loved reading this.
The Queen of the Night is awesome. It always made me sad/angry that Sarastro defeated her. >:C (but yes, she is a bitch)

squonkhunter In reply to quiteproustian [2012-02-15 08:03:27 +0000 UTC]

But her situation is understandable, right? I always get sad when she's defeated at the end, but then the majesty of the music takes over and it's just SUCH a great finale that it flings me on my butt every time and I completely forget about the queen and I actually feel happy that Tamino and Pamina are marrying, and I of course picture Papageno and Papagena there as well with some little Papageni with them, because that's the magic of a theater show: people reproduce FAST.

she's the best. And she's got the best arias in the opera. I demand an alternative ending in which she kicks Sarastro's butt.

Haha unfortunately. I'll be playing with the fact that Papageno is a servant of the queen. The operatic dimension is like my fandom gone wild.

Tamino is a total flake. I'd always marked it up to him being an Idiot Hero.

From what little research I've done, a great deal of the libretto has been trimmed down over the years. Apparently in earlier versions Papageno actually had a teensy bit of backstory beyond, "I live in a hut in the woods and trade birds for my daily bread. Anything beyond that, I dunno."

In my university's production of the opera, "Wie Stark ist Nicht Dein Zauberton" involved an antelope sneakily munching on Tamino's shirt. One of the highlights of the entire show.

My comments always seem to take on the attributes of the non sequitur. Also, I'm curious about your artistic choices concerning his nose.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to violet-raincrow [2012-02-04 07:33:29 +0000 UTC]

Wow, you're actually the first person on dA to mention his nose. In all honesty, I really don't know. It seemed right at the time and I was afraid of making him look like all my other characters (which I have a tendency to do), so I slapped that on. One of my friends today said, "Is he part koala?"
I really don't know. If anything, I probably should have put that nose on Papageno, because it's rather bird-like. I guess I was going for a puppet look. All the operatic characters I draw are the most exaggerated of my characters for that reason, because they're from a lower reality than the ones in HMS. That is, their stories are just stories and not "real life" to the HMS crew.

Wow, how long was the opera originally? Oh man, what it'd be like to get your hands on the original, amirite?!

Haha I LOVE the antelope touch! That's brilliant! That song can't be taken seriously, anyway. Quite the idiot hero.

Tamino? TAMINO?! Freaking TAMINO?! Are you ever going to draw him again? Is he going to have a personality? Is Papageno going to slap that man? Is PAMINA going to slap that man?! You have filled me with wonderment and many questions!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to Sorastro [2012-02-04 07:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha he'll make an appearance in HMS Crock Doctor when they're in the operatic dimension. They need to ask him for the Magic Flute, because it will help them on their journey.
He TOTALLY deserves a slap, though. All of the Eingeweiten do for the way they just fuck with Pamina the entire time, poor girl. And Tamino's such a dick to Papageno. Slaps are in order.

Sorastro In reply to squonkhunter [2012-02-04 23:19:08 +0000 UTC]

I'm imagining this now:
Papageno: Veilen dank fuer die Zauberfloete! (Many thanks for the magic flute!)
Tamino: Alles ist im Butter, aber ich muss es zurueck haben. (Everything's fine, but I must get it back.)
Papageno: Na klar! Aber, erste... (Of course! But first...)
*slaps him WITH THE FLUTE (!)*
Tamino: Was war das?! (What was that?!)
Papageno: Du war boese! (You were evil!)
Tamino: Wie? (How?)
Papageno: ...PAMINA?!
Tamino: Oh...aber wir sind froeh zusammen! (Oh...but we're happy together!)
Papageno: Nur jetzt...nur jetzt... (Only now...only now...)
*goes back to the rest of the crew*
Papageno: I got the flute!
*Behind him, Pamina slaps Tamino.*

squonkhunter In reply to Sorastro [2012-02-06 03:02:40 +0000 UTC]

He IS a secret bad ass! Tamino's like, "I need a princess rescued!" and Papageno is the one who ends up sneaking into the castle, diverting Monostatos, sneaking Pamina out of there, and confronting Sarastro himself (he does cower here, but could you blame him?). Meanwhile, Tamino is playing his flute, so to speak, and prancing around being ridiculous.

Heh heh, oh, Tamino.... I was trying to draw him the other day when watching the Die ZauberflΓΆte DVD, but I failed miserably at coming up with a good design of him. All the characters are difficult for me to draw, for some reason. But this came out so nicely! Awesome job~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to TheRandomAnchovy [2012-02-04 07:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Yeah, it's really hard to design the Magic Flute characters, for some reason. I can clearly picture all the Don Giovanni characters, but the Magic Flute guys are difficult. I suppose that's because they're fantasy, and the design relies heavily upon the interpreter. As Simon Keenlyside put it, Mozart gives you an entire pencil box of colors and says, "Do what you want with it." Quite true, I think.

Ba ha ha! I enjoy your descriptions almost as much as the pictures. I just may have to share your analysis with my musicologist BFF. Wish I could enlighten you on that aria, if only because it's a great pun. I'm not aware of any particular arias that are frequently cut.

"Injustice face" makes me laugh.

squonkhunter In reply to bluemoonriver [2012-02-03 18:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Haha I'm happy you read through it all! I picture injustice face as somewhere during "Wo Willst Du KΓΌhner Fremdling Hin?" when he's talking to one of the priests and looking for Sarastro so he can kill him because he's still guided by womanly intuition rather than manly reason.
Maaan...there is NO cutting the sexism out of this opera. It's a major part of the story. You can easily cut the racism; just change a few words, get a white guy to play Monostatos without blackface, and presto! the piece is not racist.
But removing the sexism? Mmmm...nope.

I think that particular part is where Tamino starts to have second thoughts about the trials he has to go through and Sarastro talks to him about it, he being the high priest and all.

Yeap, if I`m not wrong-pardon if I am, the entire libretto can get a bit confusing for some reason at times- what comes after is Tamino and Papageno getting ready to go for their great adventure and three trials, and I think Sarastro briefs him on what`s to come. By the way, have you seen Rene Pape as Sarastro in Kenneth Branagh`s version of Die Zauberflote? He made the high priest damned sexy, I swear:
[link]

squonkhunter In reply to mingxue [2012-02-04 07:42:35 +0000 UTC]

Damn, Pape, you SEXY! I NEVER found Sarastro attractive until now!

Eh...I'm not really a fan of what Kenneth Branagh does to anything. He keeps ruining my favorite literary texts.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mingxue In reply to squonkhunter [2012-02-05 02:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Same here; he did a pretty good job in Othello and Hamlet but when it came to Die Zauberflote, one didnt know how to feel about it at all, especially when the arias sung in english sort of just...lost their magic. Die vogelfanger and Ein madchen oder weibchen lost their shine, and so did O Isis und Osiris. But yeap. DAMN, PAPE. HE WAS DAMNED SEXY AS SARASTRO. I mean, at one point I just thought to myself that Pamina needed to get together with the hot high priest and not with the clueless Tamino.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to mingxue [2012-02-06 02:06:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's precisely the description I gave my friend, that it just lost its magic. Haha Tamino was pretty cute, but he's also very clueless, you're right. Pape was just...oh man. I honestly never thought that character could be attractive, even as a father figure, because of the whole sexism thing, but DAMN, he can be sexist to me all he wants!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mingxue In reply to squonkhunter [2012-02-06 02:27:41 +0000 UTC]

Agreed completely; even though the translation was flawless. And Tamino was cute- but reminded me somewhat of a singing Ken doll, to be honest. Yeap, Pape was just smoking, to be honest [ funny thing is I just realised that his costume as Sarastro was pretty much the same thing that I wore recently in a theatre production where one had to act as a Russian soldier], and really. Damn. He just worked the whole silver fox thing perfectly- definitely him over Tamino anyday.
By the way: here`s a particular concert production featuring Pape as Leporello and Terfel as the Don.
Its pretty excellent:
