Description Part 2 of my lil old age style pics. Again, tried to make it look as old fashioned as I could so didn't draw to get anatomy perfect or anything. Tried to colour it in a way that it'd look old too.

The maniacal Dr. Robotnik wasn't always an insane scientist hell bent on world domination. In his first incarnation, he was simply an obsessed scientist, curious to find out how a hedgehog could run so fast. He was an overnight success along with the hedgehog, his trademark mostache becoming instantly recognisable. Of all the characters in the early Sonic cartoons, Dr. Ivo went through the most changes. Whilst Sonic's image stayed consistent from the 30's right up to the 60's, Dr. Ivo changed several times as can be seen in the pictures. By the end of the 30's, he was fatter, his mostache more flowing and he'd had a slight personality shifty. No longer was he simply interested in finding out how the hedgehog ran so fast, now he wanted to capture him and disect him in hopes of stealing his power.

By the early 40's, he'd gone through a second change, one that would last up until the 50's. As well as making the switch to colour, his name had also been changed to Dr Ivo Robotnich. It's believed to have been changed in part due to the war. Before this time, Ivo simply had an american accent yet by the 40's he'd gained a german one. This changed during the 50's however as some felt it was politcally incorrect. His accent went back to american and his name was changed to the less german sounding Robotnik.

Other changes between the 40's and 50's included the expansion of the scientists expertese to that of an inventor as he invented an array of robots and machines to capture Sonic with.

Funny, going through my favorites, this was the very first thing I put in my favorites on my 1 and only account on Deviantart, and I gotta say, it still holds up.

He reminds me of the Osumu Tezuka character:  Old Man Mustache/Mr. Pompous.  He was in so many of Dr. T's strips I don't know which to name.  My first experience with him was in Astro Boy's first cartoon series, where he was basically Astro's grumpy, Mr. Wilson-like neighbor who couldn't help being in the wrong place at the wrong time (I know, he was Astro's teacher in the comic strips).

This style is pretty cool. Funny how the 1930s style Robotnik looks like Gerald Robotnik in Sonic X

I wonder, is there is going to be any pics of how Robotnik would have looked in the 1960's to 1978 cartoon and the 1980's cartoon like what you did with Sonic and Knuckles?

This is really neat. I like how you worked out the history.

However, I have always thought the name Ivo Robotnik and his physical appearance screamed Russian, not German. I don't know, I've just always thought he was Russian.

Interesting, though in the 1920s and 1930s wouldn't they make him Soviet-esque?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spydaman In reply to Vashna [2006-09-18 12:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Well no, why would they make him Soviet above anything else? O.o lol he was just a generic villain rather than being a dig at any current "enemy of the state"

First two almost remind me of Uncle Pennybags, the Monopoly Guy. I guess during a time of worldwide depression, a portly scientist/industrialist could be villified as the enemy of society. XD These look so real man. Almost like those Disney evolution patters for Mickey and Donald Duck.

After 1920 Dr Ivo's career was over in acting, he found an excellent position as the face of a delicious party snack called 'Pringles'...

Sorry, first thing i thought was that! But this does kick butt
