Description This is Thunder's father, a rich SkyWing named Magpie.

I had this story bouncing around in my mind for a while and I actually managed to write something for it. I wrote it all at once though, so there might be some typos or other weird stuff that I might go through and fix later.

Anyway, this takes place in the hybrid hell universe and has to do with some of Thunder's origins. Hopefully the story will give you enough info to figure most of it out.

Of course she would be here. Magpie should’ve started his search here to begin with, but he really didn’t expect she’d return to her ramshackle little ‘house’ to begin with. Apparently she really had nowhere else to go after breaking their contract.

How unfortunate…

Once he spotted the sloped roof in her dry corner of the swamps, Magpie immediately swooped down to land in front of it. He still couldn’t believe she’d actually lived here, much less returned to this pitiful mosquito-ridden mess. At least it was private out here; Magpie had neglected to bring any extra talons with him today, hoping to resolve this quickly with her. After all, Magpie dumped an awful lot of his coin into this contract they had, and by all moons he planned to get something back from it.

Before Magpie even reached the open doorway, he heard movement from the inside and saw a glimpse of brown scales. Chances are his presence wasn’t unknown by now, but he didn’t need the element of surprise now.

He stepped in calmly, an air of power and clarity always with him. Magpie spotted her immediately; sitting at her old wooden table with a cookbook, acting as if she was just reading this whole time. Magpie glared straight through her façade and into her blue eyes.

“What do you want?” Magpie was admittedly impressed with her level-headed tone in this situation, but he refused to be swayed. He already wasted too much time searching for her.

Magpie spoke clearly, “You know what I’m here for, Opossum.”

Opossum casually turned back to her book, tapping her claw rhythmically against the table, as if she was bored. “Do I?” She mumbled.

Magpie was all too familiar with these tricks she’d try to play; Opossum should know she can’t fool him. This must be some last ditch effort of hers to stop him. And it was a poor one at that.

“Where’s the clutch?” Magpie spoke louder this time, trying to get his seriousness across. Finally, Magpie saw Opossum switch from her false front and she scowled at him.

“I thought you didn’t want them anymore.”

“There’s still a chance that some of that clutch is mine and you know that,” Magpie said while he slowly stepped forward in the limited space of Opossum’s house. “That’s why you ran away isn’t it?” Magpie caught Opossum’s confident death stare falter from that statement. Good, there’s still a chance.

Opossum went silent for a moment and Magpie wondered if he should just search this house himself for the clutch. Hopefully she’d keep them nearby and he didn’t expect her to reveal the location willingly.

But before Magpie moved forward, he heard Opossum mumble again, “why did I ever accept your offer.”

Magpie felt this could be partly one of Opossum’s tricks to distract him, but some pent up frustration inside him kept him from completely ignoring it. When Magpie spoke he couldn’t help but lace some of the words with anger, “Because I offered you clean food, clean water, an actually decent place to sleep that wasn’t filth, and even jewelry!” Magpie glared hard at the two expensive gold necklaces she was wearing, with their colorful gems and value an intense contrast to Opossum’s whole brown, lowly existence. Honestly, he was surprised she hadn’t sold them yet. “And all you had to do for me was one simple thing! All I want to know why – is why you ever thought it was a good idea to betray me.”

Opossum scowled at Magpie, but he couldn’t help but wonder if there was any hint of amusement in there for what she’d done. “Because I finally found out why you wanted dragonets to begin with. And all you ever cared about was money and the money they’d make you. I don’t know, maybe I have a conscious or something.” Opossum spat.

“Says the criminal.” Magpie huffed without even thinking. He really needed to focus on the clutch for now, instead of arguing any further.

Opossum smirked, “I really should have stolen some of your stuff before I left, huh? Bet I could buy my own mansion if I had.” Now Magpie was sure she was trying to distract him, so he chose to turn away from her completely and check the rest of this house for the clutch. He would go to her secret cellar first; Magpie knew it was underneath her bed, hidden well under boards to match the rest of the uneven floor. She must regret having ever revealed it to him when they first met.

Tiny skittering from underneath caught his attention and Magpie could tell he was right on target with his first guess, maybe Opossum was hoping he’d forgotten about the cellar. Magpie was pushing aside the bed when he felt something grab his wing.

He turned, startled, but only saw that Opossum had snuck up behind him. Silent, as usual.

Her dark talons dug into Magpie’s scales more than he’d like as she tugged him back. Blue eyes were pleading with him, creating a scene that was uncomfortably familiar.

“You’ll be disappointed, Mags. None of them are yours.” Another lie. “Just leave and make your stupid money back.”

“I’ll see that for myself.” Magpie huffed and tried to knock her away. He really wanted to avoid any fighting with her but perhaps that would be inevitable. Maybe he should have brought an extra dragon to hold her back.

Opossum growled and only dug her talons harder into his wing, drawing blood. “You’re a terrible dragon.”

But before Magpie could retort or even push forward to his real business, he felt a searing sting of pain across his wing and shoulder as Opossum let out a burst of flame.

“Ah!” Magpie snarled and tore back from Opossum’s hold, stumbling to the ground. Luckily she only breathed a small burst, probably so she didn’t catch the house on fire. But still, Magpie could feel his scales burning and Opossum was quick to pin him down, threatening to burn him further.

Opossum hissed, “I want you to l–” Before Opossum finished her sentence, Magpie exhaled an intense burst of flame straight into her face. He wanted to burn her more than she burned him, but he still had to be aware of the fire-hazard surrounding them.

Opossum yelped and screamed in pain falling to the ground and backing away trying to pat out the lingering flames on her face.

Magpie did his best to ignore her fumbling and open the cellar. She would be fine anyway; she has fire-resistant scales. At least this would buy him some time to finish this business.

Magpie moved the boards out of the way and peered into the dark cellar. Even with the dim light he was able to find six very young dragonets inside the small space, all staring up with wide, scared and confused eyes.

One of the dragonets chirped, “Foods..?”

Magpie ignored their noises and wasted no time before looking for any part SkyWing features in any of them. As luck would have it, there were at least three he was sure were his. It was good that he might actually be able to make a profit after all, but to think; he could have had six hybrid dragonets or even more, if only Opossum hadn’t betrayed him.

Magpie moved into the cellar, blocking the exit with his wings as two or three of the dragonets began screaming at him. They couldn’t be more than a week old. He managed to grab the three dragonets easily enough in the small space, although the biggest one gave him some trouble, and Magpie shoved them into a bag he had brought with him and tied it as tightly as he could. Hopefully once these things were home he could convince them to behave. If he was lucky, they wouldn’t remember this ever happened.

Magpie crawled back up, not even bothering to close the cellar back up, and he saw Opossum still on the ground holding her muzzle and breathing heavily. She had one eye open to glare at him.

But Magpie glanced at her for only a moment before quickly moving past her and heading towards his estate. No need to linger any longer.

Having only three hybrid dragonets to work with has certainly changed his plans for them, but he’ll make sure to squeeze as much as he can out of them somehow. He’s not going to let his money go to waste.

No matter what.

By the way, Opossum is a MudWing, she's the mother of Thunder of course. She has dark brown fire-proof scales and I'll probably draw her sometime in the future with some more backstory maybe.
