Description Evening painting from earlier this week. I'd been meaning to draw Knuckles putting the Master Emerald back together for a while now, pretty much since my last Sonic X rewatch came by the Sonic Adventure adaption. That was, like, two years ago? Yeah.

Anyway, I think it's a cool scene there, how we see him restoring it. I watched it a few times while initially drawing Knuckles for this. I wanted the pose to be close to it, 'cause I really thought it fitting there.

You can see much more surrounding area when the Master Emerald is restored in the games or in Sonic X, although it clearly is bright and shiny. I wanted to draw the energy more, though, and ended up scrapping the bit of faint background I had at first to get rid of the clutter and have the floaty magical chaos energy stand out more.

Oh, thank you!
I kinda think the Sonic fandom is more fond of sketchy cartoony pictures...

Well, that's beautiful, quite an interesting take on Knuckles reforming the Master Emerald. I love what you did with the light, all the spiraling and swirling is very cool. The shards themselves look great too! The only issue I have with this is Knuckles himself. He looks okay, but compared to all the awesome stuff you've got everywhere else, he comes off as not as polished and finished as everything else. So I would give him more detail in the future. But that's it, this pic is gorgeous.

Now that you say it, I guess you're right and Knuckles can't rival all the shiny...

Oooooh. This is gorgeous. I love the coloring. The hi-lights and energy swirls look very mystical. You can easily imagine it's the dead of night, so a background is totally unnecessary. Knuckles looks expertly drawn, and in general just awesome.Β I especially like how you drew the shards.Β I've been contemplating how to do something similar for piece I've been meaning to finish for ages. All around great work!

Oooh the shinies!

I love it.Β  How bright it is where it's back together and how fragile the bits that arent look and all the shwooshie sparkles and subtle colour changes, and the way it's all twirling and swirling around Knuckles there as well at the Emerald itself there.Β  And the tiny details like the reflections of the light in his eyes.

Knuckles' pose and expression is just spot on too - at the same time he looks utterly in command of it all, but it's offset with that worried little concentrating frown.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Speedy1236 In reply to Awdures [2018-03-12 21:09:17 +0000 UTC]

The shinies are part of why I drew it!

Thanks!
I was struggling a bit with that balance and contrast, from blindingly bright where it's back together (Sonic X blends to white I think, for using it and for restoring it) to the still broken parts that had to look like the shards, fragile and transparent.
I got pretty much carried away with the swirls of energy at some point. I'd intended to start at Knuckles' hands and kind of wrap the energy around the Master Emerald, but it was fun to draw different textures of glow, and so I kept drawing more and more of it...

I was going for something like "I know exactly what I'm doing, but I also know how much can go wrong" when I drew him!

You know, I did this picture last... Wednesday or Thursday, and then promptly forgot about that I'd been meaning to upload it. I remembered when I read your fic yesterday (which is epic, by the way, did I say that?). It had this image of braids and bands of chaos power, linking the Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald and Knuckles, and I imagined them as shiny, colourful, glowing chains of light, and it reminded me of this picture. It was funny.

Yes it certainly has the full range of highlights and shadows!

Well it came out looking complicated and sparkly and lovely.Β  And the complicated-ness ties nicely with the notion of Knux being at the same time on top of the situation but acutely aware it wouldn't take much to go wrong for things to come dramatically apart!

Hee, before I'd even clicked on it, looking at the thumbnails in notifcations my mind went "Oohh, yes - like that!"

I started with a black background, I find it's useful for glow. Obviously primarily works for digital pics. You can draw over black with some crayons, with chalk or with some acrylic paint, but it's easiest digitally, I suppose.

It was supposed to be Chaos, with some measure of Control he's having over it staying visible, too.

Certainly a funny coincidence we made (or at least uploaded) them in the same week!

Awdures In reply to Speedy1236 [2018-03-16 07:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Now I'm googling ways of drawing on black paper.Β  Would be fun to try!

That boundary between chaos and control is just right.

Yeah - more parallel evolution!

Chalk works fine and is a bit like pencils in feel; I've tried that one. And you can get really cool results.

Maybe we could claim it's as they say and great minds think alike.

Opening hours of some shops are so weird. The only thing that's worse are office hours for registry offices and the like. Nobody who works a somewhat normal job can make those hours. What are they thinking?
If all else fails, there's still ordering stuff online.

Hey this is insane! So much cool stuff going on ... the lighting's really dramatic, and you've always drawn the Emerald incredibly ... crystalline. Like it actually looks like a big rock. That's hard.Β

The texture of the energy is so cool, too! And Knuckles' determined expression. So many things make this.Β

Thank you!

I've drawn a few Emeralds by now, and the first I drew were always bright and solidly shiny, but I experimented with how to draw them, and I feel like I like them best when they're a bit transparent, a bit like glass, crystalline as you said.

Glad you like the energy, I feel like I went a bit overboard with it, actually. But it was fun to draw!

I was going for determined and concentrated, nice that it comes across that way, too!
