Description Panel from a thing I'm working on featuring Pulp characters (mostly original ones, though all these are from French novels).

I'm waiting until I've finished drawing 20 pages (ie chapter one) before I put anything up, but it shouldn't be too long now.

Let me see... Dr. Omega, Sâr Dubnotal, Judex, Nyctalope (?), and possibly Robur.

Did I guess correctly?

Mostly correct, except it's Saturnin Farandoul instead of Robur.

I see. I don't think there's an entry for Farandoul on the Public Domain Superhero wiki yet.

I guess I had the Les Hommes Mystérieux from Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" in mind when first I laid eyes on him. The only member of this group that was part of it was Nyctalope.

Saturnin Farnadoul is from a really weird book from France in the 1880s. He was raised by monkeys on a remote island (decades before Tarzan was written), and ended up, among other things, conquering Australia and going to Saturn. The book also has cameos from various Jules Verne characters including Captain Nemo and Phileas Fogg. Except for some truly racist bits, it reads like modern comedic pastiche of Victorian literature, not something actually written in the Victorian era.

I try to stay away from topics too heavily covered in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. There's bound to be crossover as we're dealing with similar topics, but I don't plan on doing anything with Captain Nemo for instance.

As for Nyctalope, I don't think Moore read any of the books. He seemed to confuse Nyctalope with another one of Jean de La Hire's characters who could breathe under water. It's understandable as I don't think there were any Nyctalope books translated into English when Moore wrote The Black Dossier, and also the Nytalope books are utterly terrible. Just complete garbage.

That sounds extremely familiar. I think I might've heard of that book before.

Well, given that both Nemos in Verne's works supposedly die at the end of their respective novels, I guess that can make for a convenient excuse not to use him.

Really? Huh. That's too bad; the character sounded pretty cool in concept. But I guess not all old literature are classics.
