After a disastrous comedy act to help provide for her family, Pinkamena Pie joins up with some criminals to make some money, forced to take on the guise of Red Hood. After learning that her family died in a freak accident, Pinkamena tries to flee, but is forced to stay with the criminals. She is taken to Blueblood Chemicals to rob the place. Unknown to her, she is a patsy.
The gang runs into Batmare, who takes down the thugs and corners Red Hood/Pinkamena. Frightened, the mare falls over the railing into a vat of chemicals, and is washed away out of the factory.
Regaining consciousness, Pinkamena removed her mask and sees her reflection. Her once greyish coat has become bright pink, her mane is pink and permanently frizzed. This one very, very bad day drove her completely insane. Taking out her knife, she carves a permanent grin into her face so she would always be smile smile smiling! Staggering off into the night, she considers Pinkamena to have died in the chemicals. Now she needed a new identity. A new name.
She would call herself...The Joker. As you can see...she's a whole lot happier.
