This is my prompt entry for the initiation event over at Otherworld-ARPG
PROMPT 1: Your character is new to the area, how do they respond to the first creature they meet?

"Are you okay?"

It was a question she heard often. With a small pang of guilt, she lifted her head from the stream to look up at the minkin on the rise in front of her. He watched her uncertainly with kind eyes.

It was obvious why he had inquired; she was winded and parched, having lasted only a short while in the playful romp she had attempted to take part in. She wanted to play so badly, but it wasn't long before she was reminded of her fragile state. Her legs trembled lightly and her breathing was labored. Curse her frail little body, always betraying her. "Yes, I'm fine," she finally replied, a hint of sorrow in her voice. His look told her he didn't believe her. She appreciated the concern others often showed, but it also made her feel like a burden.

"Are you sure?" came another quiet question. He seemed like a shy one, but had apparently overcome that to check on her. The thought warmed her heart, even if it came with a side of guilt. She was about to reply, when, very quietly, he added, "The stream is poisoned at dusk." Her large ears perked forward and her eyes went wide. What did he say? Poison? In the water she had just been lapping up? She watched him as he shifted on his feet, then noticed the small twinkle in his eye, the slight smirk at the corner of his mouth. "The fog seeps into it, you know. Makes it taste funny."

Dawn's eyes lit up. With a flick of her tail, she lifted her front hoof and gently dipped the tip into the water, causing shimmering ripples that sparkled almost magically in the setting sun. "But it's safe where the light touches it," she cooed confidently. "Didn't you know? It purifies the poison, making it safe to drink."

The other minkin's smirk transformed into a smile. Dawn couldn't help but smile in return, and they both finally burst into giggles. "I'm Emilain," he eventually said, carefully picking his way down the slope, then hopping over the stream to join her on her side. "You can call me Emile, if you want."

"My name is Dawn," she replied, stretching her neck out to lightly touch her nose to his in greeting. He wiggled his snout and turned his head in a coy manner, but smiled all the same. He was adorable, and it was nice to meet another minkin who seemed to have overactive imagination just like hers. "I'm sorry," she said apologetically, "I'd like to play, but I can't right now. I need to rest for a bit." It made her sad to find a new friend and immediately have to dismiss them, but her body gave her no choice.

"That's okay," Emile replied, undeterred, moving with her as she found a spot at the base of a tree to settle down in. He didn't scamper off to play with someone else like most others usually did. "I don't mind sitting with you. If that's okay?" He scuffed his front hoof on the ground uncertainly, waiting for an invitation before joining her.

Dawn blinked at him in surprise, then smiled happily. "I would love the company," she said, shifting over to make room. Emile carefully laid down next to her and the feeling was wonderful. His movements were gentle and his warmth spread to her, calming her shivering in the cooling air. It was comforting and made her heart flutter.

From then on the two would always be together, sharing stories and keeping each other company.
