Description Events take place exactly as is going on.

Koschei brought both arms up with incredible speed, his lips contorting into a spittle-covered curl of disgust as his brought them down towards the smaller woman. Olga caught the thunderous blow with both arms just before they landed. The impact shuddered her entire body and drove her downwards, her boots cracking and splintering the asphalt under them. Chunks of the road sprayed out in all directions as she was driven downwards, her knees buckling from the force.

***

The Soviet Valkyrie watched the battle from above, looking down on the two combatants as they began what she knew to be one of the more difficult clashes in her long career. Koschei was a brute of the worst kind: super-strong, impervious to harm and mystically empowered. The fact he was also an arrogant bastard only made it worse. Almost subconsciously she reached down and rubbed her side, right above where her liver sat. She remembered every moment of this titanic fight, every punch that struck home and every dodged blow. It was almost surreal watching her younger self in combat with the hulking Slavic legend. The last time she had witnessed herself in combat like this, she had been the one on the other side of the conflict. The Soviet Valkyrie quickly pushed the darker thoughts out of her head and continued to watch. Quick bursts of hypersonic speed allowed her to watch from a much closer distance without giving herself away to the crowds that were both fleeing from and rushing to the struggle. It would all happen so quickly the news crews would not arrive on the scene in time, nor the AFPD or any other capes.

***

Disoriented, Olga never saw the other fist the smashed directly into her chest at emblem level. The savage punch sent her flying, her back impacting on a building several yards away. The concrete caved in from the force, dropping her onto the sidewalk and showering her with masonry.

***

The Valkyrie arched an eyebrow and began to watch her younger self much more critically. She fought far too sloppy for someone supposedly well-trained in hand-to-hand combat and with too much raw emotion. Reckless. She left herself open to blows she could otherwise have avoided. Range was her ally and she should have known that. Her laser vision, flight and speed should have ended this long before now. Fly up into the upper atmosphere and rain hell down upon him with bursts of highly concetrated laser vision, then shoot in and out with super-speed and hammer him with punches at full force. Grappling and getting in close with a beast like Koschei was just stupid and headstrong. Olga sighed and looked off into the cityscape of Angel Falls. Soon her past self would realize that duking it out in the streets was a bad idea and fly away to take the fight outside into the wilderness with that brute leaping after her. Angel Falls. It drew her attention away from the combat below. Hovering above it, she had forgotten how beautiful it was. The sun reflecting off the skyscrapers like silvered glass. The architecture, so different from her own time and dimension. Everything was so modern and futuristic. Olga thought back to her first time arriving in this strange new dimension and chuckled. Her reactions now seemed so foreign...so prudish. Her home dimension...

***

Koschei took hold of the Soviet Superwoman with both hands, cruelly taking hold of her sides. With a bestial snarl he lifted the younger version of the Valkyrie off her feet and slammed her down onto the street shoulders first. The force of her body hitting the road devastated it in all directions around her like stone hitting a still pond. Her opponent then took a firm hold of her boots and swung her like a baseball bat up and over his shoulder, slamming her body down on the opposite side of himself. Again the roadway shivered and splintered and again he swung her body in another arc to come back down a third time before finally letting her go.

***

Olga stiffened as she watched the carnage continue to unfold below her. It wasn't the fight that made her uncomfortable however. It was the realization that she could stop something that was coming, something that would save hundreds of lives and very soon. Once she had tried to kill her past self for failing to stop the needless massacres of innocent people. Olga...her younger self would never understand. She would have to learn those lessons in the future, a future Soviet Valkyrie had already experienced. So far everything that had occurred since her being trapped in this time and place had happened exactly as she remembered it. The Warlord attempting to use Claire against her...American Hero's ridiculous attempt to fool the world into thinking she was anything less than a racist murderer...everything was the same, without variation.

And if everything was the same then she knew what was going to happen in the near future to her city...but now she had the ability and power to stop it before it did.

Serenity had warned her to stay out of the affairs of this world and settle down somewhere far away, but now could she? How could she relax and drink coffee, open the paper to read about the horrors she could have prevented. Read the names of all the lives snuffed out because she locked herself away from the world. The way he had explained it to her the last time they met was something that had stuck with her and had made sense at the time.

"Imagine if you could go back in time and assassinate Hitler, before his rise to power. Would you do it Olga?" he had posed to her.

"Of course." she had responded without batting an eyelid.

"Wrong." Serenity smiled softly, shaking his head from side to side. "What if you failed and your actions were what actually caused his rise to power? Or, what if you succeeded and in doing so he was replaced by someone smarter...someone far worse. A German FΓΌhrer who actually manages to win World War II."

The Valkryie held her hands out in front of him. "These are all hypothetical. What if he was killed and The Great Patriotic War was averted completely?"

"Then there would have been no need for a Soviet Superwoman would there..." he had replied, giving her with a bemused look. She didn't return it and at that he sighed."I understand what you want to do Olga, you have a good heart, but don't. Resist the desire to interfere. Remember what happened with Aria. You thought you were saving Angel Falls and instead you handed the entire world over to Concussion."

The Soviet Valkyrie relented, nodding her head.

Nyet. She had a responsibility, both to the people and to her adopted world. She could make this all go away and no-one would know any different. The world would still never have heard of the Soviet Valkyrie and she would have averted a terrible stain on this city forever. How could she not? How could she have almost murdered her past self for the same reason and then sit back and do something twice as bad. At least the Olga battling it out against Koschei had the disadvantage of never knowing what the future had in store. What would be her excuse? Fear of the possibility that maybe she might create a worse situation? The raven-haired heroine chewed on her lower lip. What would Maia have done? What would Maia do now if she knew what was coming...

***

The Soviet Superwoman took skyward and flew out over the city. She glanced backwards over her shoulder as she cut through the azure sky. Koschei was in pursuit, leaping after her and cursing in their native language.

***

The Valkyrie tightened her fists into tight balls, the leather of her gloves creaking. Koschei leapt away to his defeat. There was no need to interfere there. The Soviet Superwoman would have her work cut out for her, but she would emerge victorious. Indeed, she remembered the people who had sent him and what that would lead to in the upcoming month and a fight she never could have imagined possible.Olga cut her eyes away from Angel Falls and out across the ocean, her thoughts turning back on her present situation. She would cut the head from this hydra before it could cause any more death and destruction. Serenity and his advice be damned! If he hadn't wanted her to take an active hand then why spare her to live in this time at all? To simply sit back and watch with growing horror as her own future raced to meet her? Nyet! There was still time.

She had all the time in the world.

To be continued...

Soviet-Superwoman, Soviet Valkyrie and the story are my creations. Koschei the Deathless is an ancient Slavic myth that I am having fun borrowing from liberally.

Well done my Dear
This will bound to cause confusion with the heroes and villains I wonder how Soviet Valkyrie would react to Maia being alive and well here in our time.

Intriguing... And a very interesting way to kick this story off, seeing the Koschei fight from another perspctive. But messing with the timestream is never going to end well. And yet people still keep doing it..

And here I assumed that the horrible event SV was trying to prevent was RIP Angel Falls...

Sorry--looks like The Dark Knight Returns has put more Frank Miller in my system than I thought… Anyway, while I hate time travel stories for all the paradoxes they bring up, I know this one is going to be great, and full of even more twists and surprising revelations than even your usual work.
