IM HERE AND READY TO SCREAM
my goodness!! the rainbow hair turned out beautifully!! and the gradients -- you blended the colors so well that they look so smooth?? and magical?? and HER EYES??? and of course, the sparkly eyes
honestly, i admire your patience to do such a piece like this, or really any of your works!! theyre always so detailed, neat, and mesmerizing!! (how long did it take you to finish this, again?...) as you probably know, my styles pretty simple and a bit bland, so maybe one day ill actually sit down and do some sort of challenging piece like this!! (but i definitely have to get better at design and anatomy, haha XD) or when im not bombarded with work...
also i havent touched colored pencils (...or inking) in a long time, so you inspired me to try more traditional art (rather than sketching)! unfortunately, i only have watercolor pencils and while i can still use them, it just feels like a waste.........but whatever maybe ill stop by the art store nearby some time...
just out of curiosity, what inspired you to make this piece?? and does she have a name??
again, you did an amazing job!! and you didnt give up!! im so proud of you

Thank you!!! Oh my god, this took FOREVER. Sketching took ages - I'd say 8 hours total - and inking actually only took 2-3 hours, but the coloured pencils took a few eons, haha. The metallic marker and white outlining took maybe 5 hours? I'd say this piece took 25-30 hours, total. Waaaayyyy longer than any of my digital pieces (I have never missed the paint can tool so much) - but worth it.
Yeah, I'm glad I didn't give up on the hair - I was really tempted to print a new copy of the lineart and start over on the colouring. Guess that goes to show that perseverance pays off. I wouldn't call your pieces bland - a lot of them are dramatic and high-contrast, and they tell a story (like the bleeding Earth? And the puppet one? And the ones with the eyes in the background? Goddang). But storytelling aside, I feel like there are 2 main ways to make a piece visually striking - one is making it high-contrast, and the other is making it high-saturation. And while I might have a handle on high-saturation, you've got high-contrast down really well.
But anyway, if you want to try something more detailed that pushes your boundaries, go for it!! And wow, I am so honoured that I could possibly inspire someone to try something they don't normally do
Honestly, this was a go-and-run-with-it piece - I was going to draw a girl with her hair flowing in the wind just for the hell of it, but then the hair was too wild to look like it was just wind, and I'm like "What could possibly make hair look like this? - WATER!" So now she's underwater, and she was going to be a human and there was going to be a fish where her tail was, but the fish was too hard to draw, so I made it a tail. If you think there was any sort of grand scheme or master plan from the start - NOPE!! Most of my pieces are spontaneous like that, actually. Composition isn't something I pay attention to until I need to Very different from your works, which have a good deal more planning behind them.
Name? Uhh... none at the moment. I don't want to pick a name willy-nilly, but I'm not quite in the mood to be thinking symbolism and stuff, so she is currently an anonymous rainbow mermaid. You can name her, if you want!

i can imagine this took a very long time!! but all the time into this really paid off nicely!! (as someone who draws broken lines, i never understood the love for paint cans...)
mm, well.. those pieces are meant to tell a story XD meant in a general sense. but i do wanna attempt high saturation -- really pops out with those colors!!
honestly, you inspired me to draw hands, full bodies, and to color more often, and i will emphasize coloring because i rarely colored XD which somehow evolved to selective coloring, which somehow inspired you, so it all came to a full circle somehow??????? THE POINT IS THAT I USED TO BE LAZY WITH ART AND WHILE I STILL AM YOU GAVE ME MOTIVATION TO PUT IN MORE EFFORT
nah i also do spontaneous pieces -- i would say maybe half of the symbolic pieces are random ideas that somehow worked, and majority of the general as well XD oddly if i plan, its always visual -- i dont really sketch until i can imagine the entire piece first. but honestly its ok if you dont plan !! sometimes you stray away from planned and end up something better, or you just .. kinda have basic ideas and then weave them together . .. maybe throw in a thing or two, spice something up.....its whatever works as the piece progresses .. and the type i suppose, because i dont think i can just think of this on the spot without thinking about placement, so i definitely commend you for creating such a marvelous work!!
me?? name?? SYMBOLISM??? OOOH IM HONORED, but ill throw in a few and see if you like them (or not)!!
for some reason "Aria" immediately came to mind, which = air, melody, and its also a solo vocal in an opera, so the fact that her hair is very flowy (well.... other than the fact that shes in the water) and shes the spotlight of the piece, maybe that could work???
"Azahara" means "to shine," "Luminita" means "little light," "Ori" means "my light" = the white dots really look like little lights and she, in general, is very bright ~
not sure why, but theres like some associations with music?? like something about it is making me consider music names, like "Eumelia" (melody) and "Mele" (song)
and of course, water names: "Kai" (sea), "Darya"/"Mira" (sea, ocean)
and flower names (since shes very colorful, it vaguely reminds me of a field of flowers): "Ayaka" (colorful flower), "Fiorella"/"Fleur"/"Flora"/"Kusuma" (flower)
...i would go on, but it would go on forever XD as you can tell, i love name meanings!!

We both inspire each other and it all goes full circle and it's honestly amazing You inspired me to do more storytelling and high-contrast works (I didn't say it explicitly, but "Entwined" was highly inspired by your [CONTROL] piece ), and to draw more props and weapons, and I think I said that the tears in my "Grief" piece (a Corvus one) were inspired by your eye tutorial, so, you know - it all comes around in the best way possible. It is flat-out incredible, how we both help each other become our best selves, art-wise
I think there are pros and cons to planning out a piece beforehand. On the one hand, you're not scrambling to figure out a fitting background and you can have props and symbols and stuff, but on the other hand, the planning phase can get a little out of hand a little too quickly (remember the OM doc? Yeah, that's what I'm talking out, except in a visual manner - sometimes you just end up confusing yourself more than anything else). Also, if you have a preconceived idea, you might miss opportunities to move in a different direction because you're so focused on creating the image already in your head. Idk if I prefer one process over the other, yet - it depends on the piece, I suppose.
OOH THANK YOU!! I'm gravitating a lot towards the "A" names (I think because early on, I'd thought of calling her Amara before deciding it doesn't sound quite right). Azahara reminds me of the Sahara Desert, which is cool, but also ironic? Idk, just something I'm keeping in mind. I do like the idea of her having a name that means "light" or shining." Aria sounds like Arya, this elven lady from Eragon, so I'm not sure I can go with that one because Arya the character and this mermaid aren't really similar (this is probably the only issue with memorable characters - their names can't be used for anything else or you'll get them mixed up). The symbolism is great, though. Ayaka is good!!! Colorful flower definitely works - she has a lot of sort of petal shapes in the blouse and tail. I think Ayaka is winning at the moment, though I'm not ruling out Azahara. Thank you so much!! I'm so flattered that you took the time to come up with such fitting names for her ❤

That makes sense, actually - I remember for lab reports, they'd be 20 pages handwritten or something, but because I spent so much time looking over the whole thing and writing each part, I knew exactly where everything was. You've likely spent ages creating the ASM doc, so it makes sense you'd know it inside and out. OM, we spent one night adding a lot of stuff and figuring stuff out and that was it.
Ayaka Azahara? Maybe a bit repetitive - Ayaka Luminita? Ayaka Kusuma? Idk

Ooh, both of the names are so nice! I think I'll go with the 1st name. Thank you for picking it!! ❤
