Really, it all depends on how you do it. Pain is only present when the transformation is not instantaneous.

((They're not major characters, either - they're more... secondary main characters. They're not allowed to really interfere, or do anything other than drag Katie from one job to the next.))

Basically, immortals exist outside of the life-death system, and aren't allowed to mess with it - they have to use "tools."

and it's not her life span, either - after a thousand years, most spirit bridges ((except when they're killed or trapped)) CHOOSE to retire to the spirit world. They aren't really dead, they're just not leaving because they don't want to do any more work.
