Description
This was supposed to be an introduction to a portfolio website for my Interactive Media class; but I got a bit carried away!The design had to feature my name (which is spelt out in the negative space between the mushrooms and the fireflies!) I did put this in intros, but I guess its not yet really, as there's no buttons or anything.
There's a lot room for improvement (the gap inbetween the S and the O, and the scraggy edges of the mushrooms - both of which bother me greatly!) But as this was my first ever Flash, I don't consider it TOO hideous!
It will take a few seconds to start... This is before I understood load bars!

Haha thats awesome. I mean, maybe not for a portfolio site entrance but as a piece of work it's totally amazing. Where do you go to school/major in? Looks similar to an Interactive Multimedia student work here at Purdue.

I'm in England, at the University of Gloucestershire. My course is called 'Animation and Interactive Media.' I was doing Fine Art originally, but it was a too restrictive in so many ways that I changed - this is much more fun!
What sort of things do you do in Interactive Multimedia?

I'm not interactive Multimedia. I have classmates who are and a friend who might switch to that. That is mostly Flash based work. I think they do a cross between animations and Flash websites/menus. I'm a 3D animation student. I do modeling and animating. Most of our animation courses occur in your Jr. year which is crazy. I think they should start earlier so that we here at Purdue can keep up with other schools that move faster. But still, I have tons of fun doing what I do.

Eh, that's so cute! Two suggestions (just because they came to mind, I think the animation's fine as it is!

Yeah, I did actually want to put a firefly dot on the 'i', but I the project deadline didn't allow for it! It's funny cause people either seem to see the 'Sophie' in there really easily or not at all! I guess it depends on wether you focus on negative space, like in those optical illisions - [link] !
I actually drew it all in Photoshop, and converted the mushrooms to PNG's. The background is still a Bitmap, if my memory serves me!

I find mushrooms really yummy some days, and other days I hate them. Just like Marmite!! Can you love and hate Marmite at the same time?! ...The adverts say you're either one or t'other!

Oh wow, why haven't I looked through your stuff before? This is truely awesome, especially when you can make out your name just at the end!
All I could say is two things, but even then, they're not suggestions to try and improve it. It's brilliant the way it is. But if you filled in that small gap with another mushroom between the "S" and the "h", and perhaps even made the letters glow a very faint yellow glow from the fireflies when they arrive (not too much, least you wouldn't be able to see them very well), then you'd be able to make sure that everyone, no matter how clueless they may be, will notice your name popping up
Like I said, you might be going for subtlety here, and it looks great the way it is. I think that's a very inspirational idea for the start of a flash production, for example

I did originally plan to have (something like this!) : the fireflies glowing brighter and shining out through the letter-holes, with bright white light filling the screen as like the end of the flash (possibly having a potential webpage fading in after that.) But I didn't have time!! Lamesauce! Maybe sometime I could remix it and see how it looks?
I shall, one day, fill that ass-crack of a hole between the mushrooms too!

The jagged edges aren't really prominent at all, unless one were purposely to go and look for shortcomings. In which case you can totally pull it off as pixel art.

This is very nice. I can't do flash to save my life, so it's nice see simple flash animations. My only critique would be that there is one mushroom in which the bottom looks a bit weird, almost as if it were a bad scissor cutting. Still Very Nice...

Yeah, its cause they're still bitmaps, and the edges are all scraggley! I can't do vectors!! *Mournful wail!*

That's really awesome, you're gonna have to teach me how to use flash properly
It could probably go faster though, with less of a gap between the mushrooms moving and fireflies arriving. At the moment it takes about 45 seconds to play through where as it should probably take 20 tops.
