Usually what I do for darks is decide the color of my light source, pick the complementary color, get a soft brush and put in in multiply, then go over my shadows. For lights I find a small very light colored brush helps with highlights. I find it a quick and easy way to create contrast between shadows and highlights.

I'm trying to do the whole, different color shadows things to put more dimensionality in things.. It's just all looking fuzzy though.. I gotta get my groove back >.< UGH!
