I think that's a great idea, and your style really allows for the flexibility. While it doesn't have to look "natural"--he's not going to be walking around on all fours on a regular basis--I think it would be interesting to have him crouch, pounce, and even sit sometimes like a regular cat or dog would. His anatomy and big hands and feet make it look less awkward than if, say, some Sonic character was trying to go down on all fours.
I think this is a good idea because it'll make the animation more interesting and entertaining. He could having a running start on all fours before going up to his two legs to gain speed or resort to all fours when making a sharp turn... there are a lot of interesting possibilities when he's able to get to the ground so easily, and I definitely think you should stick with it.
