That information is classified....but I guess I can tell you as long as you dont tell anyone else.
First of all, I've read the Deathstroke (Slade) comic books, and I'm pretty sure from that that Slade's true reasons for taking robin on as an apprentice were actually because he wants a son. He wants someone to teach and bring up like a son. He loses his kids in the comics, and never really recovers from it. I think Slade and Robin technically have more of a father son thing going on than anything else.
HOWEVER. In the Teen Titans cartoons...well...I dont think anyone with eyes and ears could claim that there is nothing slashy about the fights they have in that series. Haunted is just slash cartoonified. It's so freaking slashy. Haunted Haunted Haunted.
So...overall, I have a feeling it was never intended to be slashy...but it just is. And who am I to deny the slash whores out there, anyway?
But I can say this for certain: I will probably never draw an actual slash scene. On the other hand, I will probably throw in a few little suggestions here and there.

And, while I am not at all a slash fan, I agree with you completely in regards to the cartoon. There's a freakish amount of space left open for assumptions. >.<
