Description Tuol Sleng is known as Security Office 21 or S-21 during the Khmer Rouge period between 17 april 1975 and 7 january 1979. Previously it hosted the Tuol Svay Prey Highschool. Nowadays it is a genocide museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. S-21 was designed for detention, interrogation, inhuman torture and killing after confession from the detainees. Imprisonment lasted 2-4 months, political prisoners were held between 6 to 7 months. About 17 000 people were killed, 4 were found alive when the Vietnamese army "liberated" the country from the Khmer Rouge. Between 1975 and 1979 about 2,1 million Cambodians died (out of the 8 million inhabitants, makes it 1 in 4) under the malnutrition and attrocities carried out under the Khmer Rouge.

Little fact: Tuol Sleng means "Hill of the poisoned trees".

Nikon D300, Nikon 17-55mm, B + W UV filter.

This shot is impacting... I was there once too. I remember standing there feeling intensely, thinking a million things and having no words and I feel the same thing right now. Painfully excellent.

Powerful. Impact in the foreground with the wire bed (and especially the imprint on the bed, absolutely ghostly.) Impact again with the warmth of the wall, and again with the window which lets in so much light, but cannot be seen through from the position of the photographer.
hah, just thinking out loud about this wonderful piece, great work

Thank you very much for the meaningful comment, Kaleb! It's indeed a very strange place... In a way it looks beautiful, but you feel sick from knowing what happened in these rooms...

At first glance, I thought it was a guesthouse. Throw in a very thin hard mattress and I've stayed in guesthouses just like this in some parts of the world.

Mmmm, such vivid colours and the hamoneous, simple composition, a lot like a 13C painting, with strong lines; it's hard to imagine a place that looks like had such pain in it.

It's indeed a strange place... The colour of the walls is very typical for the french colonial buildings in Indochina, but this isn't colonial at all... Thank you a lot for the comment and favourite!

a very touching photo and well arranged!

I've read about this place and the stories behind in "national geografic"
or "Geo". unbelieveble what cruel things
happened during the Khmer Regime.

the more it's a shame that just very less of the culprits
were brought to justice!

slecocqphotography In reply to EYELIGHTZONE [2010-02-23 04:17:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed... At the moment only 6 people are emprisoned, and the first trial of Duch (the responsable of Tuol Sleng) isn't finished yet after 1 year.

The cambodian government doesn't want these trials, as most ministers are ex khmer rouge...

Thank you for the thoughtful comment!

... "The cambodian government doesn't want these trials,
as most ministers are ex khmer rouge..." ...

nothing further to add to it but:

always the same thing after dictatorships
(more or less intensive).
to get a government and country as fast as possible
back to "normality" and also to avoid a power vacuum
it may be kind of clever to take experienced who know
"how the job must be done".
but damn it's so unfair and a travesty of justice
especially for the victims and their family

It's been like that since the Vietnamese took over in 1979... Same prime minister for 31 years, that's slightly too long... And won't change in the next 5-10 years i think...
