Description Dryad’s Sanctuary is an OOAK necklace. For this piece I wanted to capture the feeling of twilight in the forest. Another major element of this necklace was to challenge myself to go out of my comfort zone with bead stitches that I do not use on a regular basis, so as to create a more dynamic piece of art.

Materials:
This piece incorporates a beautiful hand crafted cabochon that was made by ~Sleetwealth . Other major elements include; seed beads of varying sizes, round gemstone garnets, dyed pearls, Czech fire polished glass beads, sterling silver bead cones, and sterling silver bead clasp.

Techniques:
The beading techniques used in this piece include; bead embroidery, tubular peyote stitch, flat peyote stitch, stringing and two fringe stitches. The piece has been embroidered onto starch felt, which is then backed by an imitation leather cloth.

This necklace is being entered into ~Bright-Circle ’s Cabochon contest! The entries can be seen here and there are many beautiful pieces to see. [link]

Other Views…I included several views of the pendant close up because there is a great deal of texture that I wished to show in the photos.

Overall

Technique

Impact

The thing that strikes me the most about this piece is its cohesion. It's easy to let the organic beaded backstitch technique run amok, letting 'freeform' take the place of any kind of direction, but you've harnessed the power of freeform while keeping a sense of direction in the piece.

The garnet beads run a nice subtle line through, directing the eye through the rest of the piece even though the focal is offset. And the amber beads echo the rich colour of the focal cab. You've got hints of rich forest green, and the violet is an unexpected touch, but one that works perfectly to evoke the mood you're going for.

I think the piece would be a little better served with a bail that's all one color.

The choice of bead finishes is well-done--you've got pearly, silvery, transparent, matte; a nice mix of finishes so the eye doesn't get bored with too much of one.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I can see your point about the bail as well as the positives and I really appreciate you taking the time to critique my work. Your opinion means a lot to me as I think you are a really great jewelry designer (and my jewelry box agrees ).

I like the textures - it's like a little enclosed world on its own - just like twilight in the forest I think. ^^ Very organic and lovely!

It's really interesting.

I think I'd like to see some more matte textured brown towards the bottom to balance out the dryad face. It doesn't quite feel at one with the overall piece. Maybe the pale edging seems to divide it a little fromt eh rest of the pendant. The workmanship is beautiful in design and so pristine in execution, but there's something about this that just doesn't feel as organic as I would tend to associate with a tree.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am still learning how to really get a good color flow within my designs, so your words are very valuable to me. Also, I am glad to here that the technical aspect (the actual beading) looks good.

An interesting pendant. I can say now that I know as much about jewelry making as you about wood-turning, but there's still plenty to discuss.

For starters, the piece looks complete, a first, second, and close-up inspection of this view reveals little about the underlying backing, just a lot of little beads and careful work. Next, I notice the movement of the piece, visually. If my eye doesn't start at the face, it is drawn in quickly, proceeding to the very smallest beads beneath it. Eventually I go to the largest beads, and their surroundings before trying to encompass the piece as a whole, which seems appropriately chaotic, and earth colored.

Overall, this as a slight wooden feel to the sight, despite those beads with colors not often found in a tree. The piece also seems unbalanced, and heavy, for the materials used.

This is just shy of a critique, but seeing as I don't pay to be here, it is some of the best I can give at this point.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful critique. I really wanted this piece to have an earthy feel to it. I have been experimenting with different ways to balance out larger pendants. At this point I have not hit on the style that I am 100% happy with so I will keep truding along. I think part of the problem with the balance on this piece is that the bail I made to hold the pendant could be too large for some people's taste.

Thank you again!

You're welcome.
Yes, you're probably right about that feature. Perhaps if the beads used were smaller, it would seem to fit better. It does however, add a sense of visual security to the piece, that something so large is supported by a secure attachment.
