Description
Kaa continued to dangle Mowgli by his hands and keeping the man-cub’s legs tightly bound from the ankles to the vine belt of his leaf loincloth. It appeared to Mowgli that Kaa would keep him like that all day if the boy didn’t say something. After several minutes of glaring at Kaa’s face Mowgli found something to say.
“You didn’t wrap me all the way up.”
“Yes. Is there a problem with that?”
“You left all my most ticklish areas exposed.”
“Your most ticklish areas are always exposed.”
“But my hands and legs are tied. I can’t defend myself.”
“Is that important?”
Despite his best efforts, Mowgli couldn’t maintain his frown any long and a grin started to form on his face. “It means you have to tickle me before you let me go. It’s the Law of the Jungle.”
“You know what? You’re absolutely right.”
“So aren’t you going to tickle me?”
“I will, but there’s no hurry. It will be better if it happens when you’re not suspecting it. In the meantime, we can talk.”
“You could let me go first. You don’t have to have me tied up to talk to me.”
“It’s more fun for me this way.”
“What about me?”
“You don’t mind it all that much. Your face is giving you away. Actually, I bet you’re enjoying this. So, do you have anything you want to talk about? You seemed upset before.”
Mowgli didn’t want to admit that the snake was right, so he forced himself to frown and declare, “Every time I wake up recently I can’t move. I should be free to move about in the jungle.”
“We discussed this and agreed that it’s best to sleep up in the trees, and you have to be secured so you don’t fall and hurt yourself. But we could come to a compromise. Tomorrow morning you will be able to move your arms when you wake up. How does that sound?”
It didn’t sound great but was an improvement, and Mowgli wasn’t in a position to bargain for anything better at the moment. “Okay, I don’t think I have a choice. How will that wor… AHH HA HA!”
While Mowgli was thinking about his response, Kaa maneuvered his tail behind the man-cub and traced a figure-eight pattern on his back. “How fortunate you’re suspended in the air,” remarked the python. “Yesterday I didn’t get a chance to find out how ticklish your back is.”
Kaa stopped long enough for Mowgli to reply. “Yes, it’s lucky this happened. Okay, you tickled me, you can let me go now.”
“You think I’m letting you go now?”
“No, but I’m willing to admit I’m wrong.”
“Well, it turns out you’re right.”
As Mowgli expected, Kaa resumed tickling the boy’s back, moving his tail all over. Mowgli was laughing continuously, but more intensely when tickled closer to his sides. Then Kaa suddenly licked Mowgli’s stomach and drew a much louder response.
“HAA HAAA AAAH!”
Kaa stopped to let Mowgli recover his breath and remarked, “Your back is ticklish, but not as much as your belly.” Just as Mowgli was about able to speak, the python resumed tickling the man-cub all over his back, stomach, and chest. The results were very similar to the day before, with the belly and armpits proving the most ticklish. After another slight pause, Kaa went after Mowgli’s feet. That drew another loud gasp and Mowgli, in his incoherent state, forgot how his feet were almost as ticklish as his stomach.
On this occasion Kaa was more careful. Every time it looked like Mowgli would start to gasp for breath or hyperventilate, Kaa would let up. Then when it appeared that Mowgli was almost breathing normally, Kaa would resume. Kaa took great delight in watching Mowgli’s futile efforts to escape. The man-cub could twist his upper body a little, but that was certainly ineffective in getting away from the tickling. With this pattern Kaa kept up his fun for a solid hour.
Naturally Mowgli couldn’t think straight during his uncontrollable laughter. How could something that felt so great be so unbearable? No, he was able to bear it because he was so tough. It was a great challenge, but it was annoying and frustrating to be so helpless. Then a different thought: maybe hanging by his hands for so long would stretch his spine and make him taller. That would be a good thing.
Eventually Kaa decided that was enough for the day. The snake unwrapped his coils from Mowgli’s legs, and then from Mowgli’s wrists – dropping him into the same puddle over the boy’s head in depth. Mowgli propelled himself up, getting his head over the surface – and then didn’t have the strength to climb out. He could brace his feet against the sides of the water-filled hole and hold onto the edges with his hands, but it would be some time before he would recover sufficient strength.
It would take half an hour for Mowgli to regain enough strength, but he didn’t feel like climbing out yet. Kaa just rested, coiled around the branch he had braced himself against during the wrestling match and ensuing tickling event. But after another half hour, Mowgli’s tummy began to rumble, so he made the effort to climb out of the deep puddle and walk carefully on solid ground. Kaa anticipated the man-cub’s hunger, slid down from the tree, and asked, “Ready for a good dinner?”
At that point Mowgli just wanted to eat something and then get a good night’s rest. He wasn’t even aware that lunchtime had long passed. Kaa led the away to another grove of fruit trees. The nourishment did make Mowgli feel a lot better, and he began to wonder why he was in such a bad mood before.
When they were finished eating, Kaa asked, “Are you okay now?”
Mowgli had to admit, “Yes, I’m feeling good now.”
“Good. You looked upset before.”
“I was, but, … I should have expected you to trick me like that. Why was that puddle so deep?”
“There used to be a big tree there that rotted after it died. There are several more holes like that farther ahead. Not all of them are so deep, though. How do you feel about trying the splashing game again some time?”
“I think it would be fun jumping in those puddles knowing that they might be deeper than my head. I’ll splash you yet. And … I don’t know why, it felt good wrestling you.”
“That was a good way to burn up some energy.”
“That could be it.”
“So how did you like that game?”
The man-cub definitely would like to try again, but now right away. “It should go into the rotation of games we play. You said you know lots of games, so let’s play all of those before repeating the ones we did so far.”
“That’s a deal. And now, if you’re finished, I have a promise to keep. Stand up with your arms out.”
Mowgli obeyed without thinking but managed to ask, “Why?”
Kaa’s silent response was to quickly wrap up Mowgli from his ankles to his armpits, with the boy’s arms stretched out to the sides. The python tightened his grasp enough so that Mowgli couldn’t take a deep breath. Having his coils go around the man-cub’s stomach and chest without his arms in the way felt better to Kaa than before. There was something about the continuous direct contact between Kaa’s skin and Mowgli’s expanding and contracting torso with each breath that wasn’t present when Mowgli’s arms were also encompassed within Kaa’s coils.
Being wrapped up like that also felt very good to Mowgli. He grinned as he asked, “So is it bedtime?”
“I’m not letting you go tonight.”
Mowgli pretended to be disappointed, and then remarked, “With my arms free I can hit you.” Mowgli hit Kaa lightly and ineffectively.
”That’s true, but I can also squeeze harder.” Kaa grinned as he demonstrated.
“Urk!” Now Mowgli could take only shallow breaths. At first it was rather uncomfortable but after a few moments Mowgli decided that it felt better than before. He liked the feeling of being hugged, with the snake’s skin pressed hard all around the man-cub’s body. Every breath he took accentuated the feeling. His brain told him he didn’t want this feeling to end anytime soon.
Kaa held Mowgli in the tight embrace for a minute before relaxing to his previous position.
“Can you go back to holding me tighter? That felt great.”
“I want to be sure you can breathe easily.”
“I could breathe fine …” Mowgli suddenly thought up a solution. He hit Kaa harder than before, but the blows didn’t do any damage as Mowgli had limited leverage.
“What!?” responded the python in surprise. Kaa had to respond and retightened his grip on the boy. “You asked for it!”
With that, Kaa swept Mowgli up and braced himself on a high branch, suspending Mowgli like a hammock, very similar to the night before but with the man-cub’s arms hanging down limply. “I hope you realize you’re spending the night like this.”
It was difficult for Mowgli to speak as he could only take shallow breaths again, but he managed, “You better be telling the truth. If you loosen me before morning I’m going to hit you again.”
“Yes, sir!” Kaa retorted mockingly. It was a very pleasant way to spend the night. While he drifted off to sleep, the python contemplated which game they would play the next day. Due to Mowgli’s recent behavior, it should be a rough game.
