Description Well-enough was not left alone. I went too far on the foreground tree and robbed it of the visual power it had in Version 3. Now it's a big green mess. I should have stayed with sparse and dark, and just done a few slightly-lighter patches to cover the trunk and limbs a bit. That would have worked. This went too far and essentially ruined it.

That's why we do experiments. We learn what works and what does not by trial and error. Mistakes can be better teachers than successes. With a success, you learn your lesson by duplicating the results because that's what worked. With a failure, you learn your lesson by doing something different. You've eliminated one mistake, and now you're free to try something new.

On the plus side, it still looks better than Versions 1 or 2. There are elements in it that I still think worked - basically, the left side of the painting is still good. This is my second-ever attempt at a landscape painting, and it's a marked improvement over the first one ( [link] )

As long as the mistakes aren't repeated in future works, the lesson pays off. Next time I do a backlit tree, I will do it differently and it will look better. As far as I'm concerned, almost the entire foreground in this picture is a failure, but the background is pretty good. So my next experiment will have something different in the foreground... a brick wall, a person, something other than terribly-painted tree.

I'm still learning these processes myself, and am happy to share the lessons I pick up along the way. The idea that others may benefit from this pleases me greatly.

The lesson I learned from the experiment is that I am too impatient to make nice foreground trees. I will certainly try to improve my skillset and practice making foreground trees, but until I get better at that, by practicing and practicing with smaller pieces, I should stick to my stronger suit, which is painting people and things from direct visual references.
