I spent some time thinking about how I could show ruin and desolation without put any corpse or dead people on screen. The answer was in the problem : the water and the shadows are hidding the corpses and we just see the surface (and there is also another reason that explains we don't see dead people, let's see it at the end of the chapter in like, well, six pages ?)
