Considering how people born out of wedlock are treated in Westeros, the Sand Snakes are the least bastardly bastards out there.

They are not great characters but you did a MUCH better job at making them interesting and likable than the TV show did.Β

I have avoided the show since it went into things that haven't happened in the books, but I'm not surprised! And thank you!

I love this. I love your Obara especially; she is my favorite Sand Snake, and this comes closest to showing her like I imagined her.
I also really like how you managed to make them still look like they could be related, even while preserving their differences!
Like, I can see the same prominent cheekbones on Obara and Nymeria, the same narrow, pointed jawline on Tyene and Nymeria, and Sarella having kind of a cross between Tyene's and Nym's sharp pointed chin and Obara's big square jaw.
I also love Nym's jewelry, Tyene's hair and Sarella's bow. The lines of the bow are very graceful.
(I also feel like Obara looks just right for her age -- I am thirty myself and I'm beginning to have forehead lines and crow's feet, and I imagine Obara is outside A LOT under the brutal Dornish sun, which I do not imagine is kind to a lady's skin, LOL.)

Oh really? I get the most criticism over Obara haha. I just like depicting GRRM's not-so-beautiful characters.Β
Also your compliments are too generous, I really didn't think about any of that stuff I just drew some ladies. Thank you so much!

Really awesome. I won't say anything about Obara because I think you've seen enough about that haha. One question though, why did you draw Tyene in a Septa-esque style? Is it because her mother used to read to her from the Seven-Pointed Star? Or did I miss something in the books?

Sir-Heartsalot In reply to gunnar-santos [2014-04-06 22:21:35 +0000 UTC]
Also, forgot to say this because it's a spoiler but she basically IS a Septa.

They say she is just sort of proper. Not that she literally is a septa, I was just going for a feel.

Yeah, that is true. But when a character is described as ugly, it just sparks something in me and I have to make them as unappealing as possible. I was going for a more leathery look but she does look like she's 60.Β
Thank you! I hear that from time to time but I never remember what I even wrote.

Nym can get pretty freaky. She mentions that when she heard that Oberyn had died, she was in bed with the Fowler twins. Sounds kinky enoug already, but if you look in the appendix it says that the Fowler twins are girls.

Saika-Vulcanoid [2013-06-13 18:39:17 +0000 UTC]
Obara looks too much like a man for my liking. It might be because of her eyes. I always imagined her with shorter hair, tall and lean in a muscular sort of way, not heavy like a lumberjack. She wields a spear after all and if she's anything like her father, she's quick, not strong.
As for the others, Tyene is simply.... perfect.

Well they say she has a bun, I believe. Also, I don't think she looks overmuch like a man. Some women are this bulky, especially fighting women. Maybe she looks a little older than I intended, but she is the oldest I believe. Or maybe not. Anyway, women are hard to draw haha.

you forgot that Sarella is in oldtown, disguising herself as a boy (Alleras/the spinx) and is going to play some major plot roles with Sam and Jaqen Hgar (who was the alchemist who killed and took on the persona of Pate). !!!! much much much more interesting than the line you gave her in your description! "inherited hisssssss desire to freak out the squares. Hiss." =/ not suitable. should be more like "is above the petty vengefulness of her sisters, stealthy and intelligent."
π: 0 β©: 1
Sir-Heartsalot In reply to cnicht [2013-04-13 05:52:59 +0000 UTC]
You're making a lot of assumptions for things that haven't come to pass. I chose to describe her based on what we know of her not what you want to happen. Also disguising herself as a boy to get into the Citadel is inheriting her father's desire to disrupt the establishment. It's an apt description.
π: 0 β©: 1
cnicht In reply to Sir-Heartsalot [2013-04-13 13:16:52 +0000 UTC]
She doesn't want to disrupt it, she wants to be a master but only boys are allowed. She's already forged several links for her chain, which is no small feat and implies she's dedicating herself to learning... Not disrupting. There are several mentions of her throughput the book and the references make note of her preference of learning rather than sparring with her sisters. She is more in tune with the big picture of the world rather than the little squabbles like her sisters. I would defiantly consider her to be the most interesting of the sand snakes and the most mysterious.

Sir-Heartsalot In reply to cnicht [2013-04-14 05:26:59 +0000 UTC]
The establishment. The establishment being the Citadel does not allow women to enter it. She is pretending to be a man, therefore, she is disrupting the status quo. I didn't say she was disrupting other students or making a mess of things. She's disrupting social norms. i.e. "freaking out the squares." by doing what she wants regardless of rules. That's all that line indicates, that's all you should take away from it.

I know you don't find these ladies to be very inspiring, but I absolutely love them. They've got a real "Charlie's Angels" thing about them. I sincerely hope we get to see more of them in The Winds of Winter. Nymeria is going to be part of the Small Council. Tyene is going to be a septa, working with the new High Septon. Obara is hunting down the Darkstar. And then there's the Sphinx.....
All of this, perhaps even Sarella's little game, is being done at the behest of Prince Doran Martell. Which now makes him in my book one of the most terrifying forces in the series. The positions he has placed his nieces in, and given their various reputations and capabilities, is a recipe for calamity for King's Landing and the Lannisters alike.

I definitely agree they are much much more interesting in A Dance with Dragons. You're right, they are the Charlie's Angels to Doran's Bosley. And in that sense, I like them. If they do what he tells them haha. Doran rules, I really like the reveal that Oberyn and Doran always worked together and used Oberyn's status as a loose cannon to do all the things Doran as the symbol of Dorne couldn't. They are like, two of the best characters to emerge in the later books.

It was a Simpsons reference, to the episode where Homer finds out his mother was a hippie and meets her two old friends and they go cruising around town to "freak out squares". Squares being, normal people.
