Description I have a hobby: I celebrate other people's birthdays.

In less than two days (July 19th) is the birthday of the gentleman in this picture, Kamijo of the Japanese rock band Versailles Philharmonic Quintet.

... I've known this person for a long while. I like his music, I enjoy his sense of aesthetics and I respect and admire his determination in his field. To think that this gentleman's 6 years older than I am and with our birthdays approximately 6 days apart, I have to admit that there's entirely too many uncanny coincidences in our lives since our paths crossed. That's... almost scary. But that makes it a birthday worth celebrating for sure.

And since we are both fans of Mme. Rice's Vampire Chronicles... This is fitting, I hope.

Hello! And thank you very much for spending your time to write such a wonderful comment. I really appreciate it!

Thank you very much for looking up Kamijo and picking up the "Interview with the Vampire" reference, too! You see, Kamijo is a big fan of the Vampire Chronicles, so he actually did a series of photographs where he posed as Lestat from the movie. This picture was drawn from one of them: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-87YDtj-hpwQ… Since I used this photo as reference, it explains why everything looks very cramped in the same picture. (It also explains his smaller hands and shoulders, too.) This was probably not the best photographic reference, but I thought it was an appropriate one for that moment.

I do agree with you, there are a large number of things I can work on for the future. Anatomy remains one of my weakest points. And I have been trying to improve, one project at a time. It's just not very easy since I don't have a lot of time to draw anymore. And thank you for telling me about the "rambling" style, too. I agree with you, I was running out of time and decided to keep too many things too sketchy. I am glad you pointed that out, too. It reminds me that I need to manage my time better!

So your comment has been a lot of help! I really appreciate it!
Have a nice weekend, too!

Aahhh yes that picture explains a lot
It being just that little bit more stretched and the high contrast making whats light so white.
I'd say that if you next time take such a source as reference, also desaturate the reference in a program,
so you can see the true values and maybe also where to add a touch of shade to make that depth come out.
Like that arm with the tiny hand XD Even in the picture the way the light is kinda deforms the arm.
O and I'd say, if you got a certain size of paper and a different sort of reference, you can 'cut' some of the borders of with pencil and ruler,
draw a new border. And then when you are done you could or cut it, or make a passepartout (frame out of carton)

I'm happy I could help you a bit!

I have been showing this photo to a lot of people who commented on this work. I think this picture explains a lot of things!
It also highlights where my mistakes are and where I need to work on more in the future. (The high contrast is something that's really common this this type of photography. Apparently it makes the musicians look even paler, which is considered beautiful.)

I like your idea of the passepartout! I should look into it in the future.

Thank you once again for helping me out and giving me such wonderful ideas!

Greetings from , I hope you won’t mind a bit of a critique!

Right off the bat, I have to say, I love this piece, there is so much emotion going on behind it, especially in the woman’s eyes, (The one with her eyes open) it’s just, stunning. I love the simple shading with the amber-like background, and I really love the way you made the bottom woman’s veil, I love how you’re able to see through it, but there is just enough shading to convey the message that it’s there!

There are just a few things I think need a little tweaking.

First, the woman at the bottom, her body is a little hard to distinguish, is she supposed to be just a head or…?

Second, I feel there needs to be some more distinct lines, especially on the top woman’s right arm, it looks a little too sketchy to me. Maybe add a darker line to kind of bring it out some more.

Lastly, I love how you did the foreshortening, and it could be just me, but I feel like the way you cut her right arm off a bit kind of makes the form a little…strange. Again, that’s probably just me!

Overall, this piece is beautiful, love the attention to detail and subtle shading you did, it really brings the whole thing together!

Anyways, that’s all from me, good luck on your art journey!

Hello!
Dear me, no... why would I be posting on Project Comment if I didn't want a critique?

First things first... thank you so very much for your very kind words! (The only problem is... this is a man and a woman. And here is the reference photo: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-87YDtj-hpwQ… I know it's hard to believe, but please take my word for it... the person in white is really a guy!)

With the reference photo in place... Yeah, I do agree with you. Some more distinct lines might be a good idea. This one was meant to be somewhat sketchy, but there's definitely something about being too sketchy. The woman being held... yeah, if I get off my lazy butt and actually put in the details in the clothing, it'll actually look like a shoulder. Like you said... it's a bit too sketchy! As far as the arm goes... you're not alone, at all. Even I think there's something wrong with that arm. I looked at the photo for a long time and tried to get it as close as possible. But as someone pointed out to me earlier... the arm in the photo was in a strange position, too. I guess it's a matter of me being sketchy and him wearing huge puffy sleeves that do not help anybody. I will try to work on foreshortening, though. It's something that always bugs me. I think I need to be a lot better!

So... thanks a million for leaving a lovely comment. Much appreciated!

The genders of the people?
Well, you are definitely not the first, nor the last, nor the only person to make that mistake. What we have here is a man who really has the face of a girl.

That aside, you've definitely helped. Thanks for taking the time to write out this comment again!

Hello there! I'm here from ProjectComment ^u^

I have to say, this is a very beautiful piece! The shading on the hair looks amazing. It's detailed and soft, and looks like it could be real hair sitting upon his head. It's really hair to do all the little lines in hair so well, so good job on that! And the faces are done exceptionally well too! It's obvious that you have practice in drawing faces, because they look rather perfect. The eyebrows and eyes on the guy looks stunning, and I really like how bright and piercing the iris is. And on the girl as well, the face looks peaceful and calm and the details are really well drawn.
One problem that immediately stuck out to me in this piece though is his upper arm. I know it's suppose to be bent behind him, but it honestly kind of looks like he has a very short arm. Like his hand is sticking right out of his shoulder. If you had visibly drawn the upper arm and lower arm bending, I think it would have avoided that. (I hope that explanation makes sense, sorry if I haven't explained it well, but hopefully you see what I mean)
And my only other critique is that some of the lines on the hair are perhaps a bit too choppy? Especially at the top. It sorts of breaks up how realistic the rest of the hair works. I'm not quite sure how this is best to be fixed, but it might work better to, instead of having 3 chunks of hair in a line that are choppy and go against the rest of the hair (like how you've drawn it at the top of the hair, above his eye), it might work better to have a singular chunk of hair go against the rest, and to intersperse these throughout the hair. It'll look more natural that way.

Other that that though, I can't see a single other thing wrong with this drawing! That shading is done really well, and it's clearly visible that your skilled in drawing people traditional. This is a great piece of artwork, and I hope that you keep working and improving, because you can make some really amazing things if you do!
Hope I  was able to help even a little. Have a lovely day ! <3

Hello!

Thank you so very much for coming to visit. And thank you very much for your very kind words. I really appreciate it! And what's more importantly, I really need to thank you for your very in-depth critique and suggestions! It's really kind of you!

The reference picture is this one: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-87YDtj-hpwQ… And since he really does have a rather strange hairstyle, it might explain why the hair looked choppy. (And I completely agree with you. That arm looks all sorts of wonky. It took me forever and it still looks kinda awful... ) In this case, I think I still need to work on my posture a bit (and probably start with an easier pose!) But It's nice to be challenged once in a while and actually meet that challenge head on.

So, thank you very much for your encouragement! I will keep working hard in the future!
Have a nice day!

Aww, it's no problem! I'm just happy to help out

Ah I see now. Honestly based on the reference I think you did the best you could! You drew the arm just like reference, so I think it's just the angle of the photo that's weird and not your drawing honestly. Same with the hair >o>

But it's great that you're trying to challenge yourself! It's really easy to get stuck in comfort zones, so I completely encourage trying out challenging poses like this one! Even if it's hard and doesn't turn out perfect at first, it's a great way to learn and improve c:

Thanks for answering back!

I still agree with you, that arm is wonky. I know it's a weird sort of position he was in, but I still think I could do better - after all, it doesn't look -that- strange on the photo, right? But the hair... yeah. Strange rock-star hair-do means... strange drawing. There's not much more I can do about that...

Thanks for your encouragement! You've been very kind!
Hopefully the next time we meet, I will be able to continue to impress you!

This is very lovely indeed, my dear. This is so very lovely indeed. I see that you tried really hard and were really passionate for the artist that you drew.
Were you thinking of anything besides this man? I think not. I think that he would like this picture--I think you care.
Anyways, very good job, once again. I shall be on my way.

I am leaving, goodbye.

Hello.

Thank you very much for leaving a note. And I am sorry that I wasn't there to see you leave. I apologise!
Was I thinking of anything else besides this man? Well, yes, of course. I am never able to finish a piece in one session. So life intervenes and I need to worry about a lot of things other than a piece. But I am quite happy that you think I was very focused on it. That means I have done something right. Do I care if the artist would like this piece? Maybe. But it's not very feasible to ask a question like that. Some times, all we can do is just imagine.

Have a nice day.
And once again, thank you.

Hello!

Thank you so very much for your very kind words. I really appreciate it!
I have read through most of the series except for the new series ("Prince Lestat" and "The Realm of Atlantis.") I find the older series a lot more engaging than the more recent ones. I hope that when I have the time to read the two latest ones, I will be able to rediscover the same spark that I read years ago.

In the meantime, there's no one out there quite like Lestat.

As our friend the Brat Prince would say, "I assume I need no introductions."
Now, about this whole inspiration thing... Let me see, you are probably familiar with this promotional photograph: i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/1… That was quite a famous one, I recall. In fact, it is so famous that several years later a certain musician who is quite obsessed with the Brat Prince himself decided to imitate this photograph and shoot one of his own: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-87YDtj-hpwQ…

... and now, you have your answer.

In the meantime, thank you so very much for your very kind words. And thank you for your support!

This gentleman has been a long-term muse of mine. Heck, I've known him for close to 17 years (and he's been singing for about 21). You might say we go way back. (If you are ever interested, please check my "wallpaper" section. It's... basically all him. (This is him, too. Forgotten Melodies  )

This gentleman goes by the stage name Kamijo. He has been active in several bands over the year with slightly different sounds. But over the last 8, 10 years or so, he has done a whole lot to cultivate his very own vampire prince persona in the band known as "Versailles Philharmonic Quintet" and his own solo project "Kamijo". Highly recommended if symphonic metal is up your alley.

Cheers!
