This mystical creature resembled a shaggy tapir only with a coat like a tiger in striped brown, white and orange, a tail like a cow and a long flexible snout. It had long tusks, similar to an elephant, and its small black eyes revealed an intelligent and benevolent nature.

Baku are tapir-like creatures that feed on people’s nightmares, hence their nickname “Dream eaters”. They ward of evil and bring good sleep. Baku rarely seeks out evil but has been known to aid good adventurers and protect the defenseless from evil spirits. Baku can be befriended and become loyal family companions, and anyone lucky to have a baku in their home will always sleep peacefully, but they can never be domesticated. A baku’s ivory is highly prized on the black market, being worth 1200 gp per tusk, but only evil creatures would pay for them and a baku will never protect the owner of a pair of baku tusks. The baku is the natural enemy of night hags.
Almost everything in a baku’s treasure are made of items that protects their wearers from evil, such as amulets, talismans or lucky charms, be they truly magical or just thought to be so like a rabbit’s foot. A grown baku stands 3 feet high at the shoulders, 4-½ feet long and weighs a little less 200 pounds.

Combat

Baku are noble and peaceful creatures, but they will attack evil spirits and creatures with a tranquil fury that can be terrifying to observe. When fighting ethereal opponents, they make well use of their spell-like abilities, either forcing them away or turning them corporeal and then spearing them on their tusks.

Blessed Ivory: The tusks of a baku are filled with positive energy. A baku’s gore attack is treated as holy and therefor deal an extra 2d6 points of damage against all targets of evil alignment and is treated as both good and cold iron for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. This power fades if the baku’s tusks should be removed from its body.

Comprehend Languages: A baku can understand any spoken word. This works similar to a permanent Comprehend Languages cast on it, only that the baku does not need to touch a creature to understand it. Should this ability be dispelled, the baku can activate it again as a free action the next round.

Consume Nightmares: A baku is able to consume the nightmares of sleeping people, either natural ones or those caused by a Nightmare spell. This ability works just as a Dispel Evil spell cast by a 10th level cleric that the baku can cast once per round, targeting a sleeping creature that it touches. The targeting creature is healed of all effects from the Nightmare spell, including the damage taken. Every time a baku consumes a nightmare, it gains 5 temporary hit points. Alternative, a baku can also feed on a person’s normal dreams. When doing so the target is entitled to a Will save (DC 18). If the target succeeds the save, the baku will fail to consume its dreams and the target becomes immune to the same baku’s dream eating for 24 hours. If the target fails, he is fatigued upon waking till the next night’s sleep and does not gain any benefits it would have received from sleep, such as natural healing or the ability to regain spells after resting. A baku gains no temporary hit points from consuming normal dreams. This is a mind-affecting sleep effect. The save DC is Wisdom-based.

Ghost Scent: A baku’s sensitive snout can smell the aura that ghosts leave behind. This allows it to track incorporeal creatures. Tracking a incorporeal creature follows the same rules as normal tracking except that the base DC is always 15 regardless of surface, the baku ignore modifiers for poor visibility and fresh snow cover, and the DC increase with 1 for every hour instead of every 24 hours.

Spell-like Abilities: Caster level 10th, DC 14 + level, DC saves are Wisdom-based.

At will - Arcane Sight, Detect Evil, Detect Poison, Detect Undead, Disrupt Undead, Polymorph Self (tiny to medium sized animals only)
3/day - Bless, Blur, Cure Light Wounds, Daze, Deep Slumber, Detect Thoughts, Dismissal, Dream, Guidance, Hold Portal, Invisibility to Spirits, Knock, Pass without Trace
1/day - Chameleon, Confusion, Cure Moderate Wounds, Ghost Trap, Holy Smite, Misdirection, Remove Paralysis, True Seeing

Ward: A baku is always under the effect of a Protection from Evil spell as if cast by an 8th-level cleric, granting it all the bonuses from the spell, including the +2 deflection bonus to AC and resistance bonus to saves against attacks and effects created by evil creatures or spells. Plus, this ability also grants the baku a +2 bonus to its spell resistance against all spells and spell-like abilities made by evil creatures and spells. Three times per day, a baku can extend this ability into an aura, similar to a Magic Circle against Evil spell, centered on the baku and moving with it, granting any creatures within the same bonuses as the baku, including the spell resistance bonus (if characters within the circle doesn’t have spell resistance they simply gets SR 12 while remaining inside it). This circle lasts 8 minutes.

Skills: A baku has a +4 racial bonus to Concentration, Listen, Search, Sense Motive and Spot checks. *A baku also gains a +4 bonus to Survival when tracking by scent.
