Description
The tiny dark brown tom-kit sat on the soft moss bedding, awaiting his mother's return. His amber eyes were wide and alert, while his much light-headed siblings tumbled around in the nursery, disturbing the queens in their sleep. Russetkit curled his tail around his paws, looking out of the nursery entrance. He sighed as a cold wind fluffed his fur up. His ears bristled with uncertainty. His mother wouldn't usually stay out this long, especially on a cold night like this.

Russetkit looked around, making sure no eyes were on him. The two other queens were sound asleep. And his siblings were too busy making a ruckus with the other kits to notice him. He swiftly slipped out of the nursery and padded along the camp's rocky walls. His ears were flattened against his head, as he slowly passed the camp guards. Spottedclaw was on duty, and he new if he was found roaming around camp this late at night, he's be mouse-dung for sure.

Reaching the medicine cats den where he saw his mother disappear a few hours ago. He peered in through the bramble walls, which scraped his face lightly. His ears shot up as he recognized the familiar voice of his mother.

"What do you mean I cannot return to my kits?!" Poolshine's voice seemed sharp with outrage. Her fur was bristling. Russetkit couldn't see his mothers face, for she had her back to him. But the constant flicker of her light brown tail made him uneasy.

"I'm very sorry, Poolshine. But the disease you've caught could spread onto your kits. And maybe to the other queens of the nursery. I'm sure Sunseed would do a great job at mothering your kits..." Shimmerlight seemed distressed, yet her voice was calm and peaceful. Much unlike Poolshine's.

Russetkit's eyes grew wide. Sunseed would be their mother? But why? Wasn't Poolshine going to come back after her disease wore off. He listened more carefully again.

Poolshine gave a half-hearted sigh, and her head hung low. She knew very well what fate awaited her. The disease she caught was extremely fatal, and could not be cured. She nodded then padded up to a soft feather bedding. She curled up and rested her pick nose on her paws, closing her tired eyes.

Shimmerlight looked sadly at the queen and sighed, looking up at the sky. Russetkit pulled his face away from the brambles and looks around, confused. He knew what happened to kits who's mothers spend long periods of time in the medicine cats den. They never see their mothers again.

The tiny kit jumped up, as a prod hit his back. He turned around, fur bristling. A large white tom with darker spots was standing behind him, blue eyes glowing with tiredness. Russetkit's fur lay flat and he let out a sigh as he noticed it was only Spottedclaw.

"What are you doing out of the nursery, young kit?" he asked, flicking his tail gently.

"N-nothing," Russetkit mumbled darkly, before padding slowly towards the nursery. He jumped in, the smell of milk and kits drifting over to his nose. His siblings had fallen to sleep beside Sunseed. He glared darkly before turning around and lying down in the corner all alone. They were already swooning over their new mother . But she would never be a mother to Russetkit. No matter what happens to Poolshine.
