Description This is another drawing used in my fourth project of the Artist Book and is also a very real mammal alive today. The Echidna (eh-kid-na) is one of only two kinds of mammals who lay eggs that survive today called monotremes, the other being the Platypus. Laying eggs is an ancestral condition, that is something more recent kinds of mammals adapted out of in time. It eats like an anteater, termites and ants, and is spiny like a porcupine. The eggs hatch, usually two, into immature babies similar to those of marsupials and are nursed by something called "mammary hairs", which developed prior to nipples. Monotremes, egg-laying mammals, are such interesting creatures..
